The LG G8 doesn’t get as much attention as the rest of the Android flagships released in 2019, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth your time. It was one of the first phones to ship with the Snapdragon 855 chipset, and has two capable cameras and clean Android software. It’s even starting to receive the big Android 10 update.
Right now for Cyber Monday, you can get it on sale for an incredibly affordable $399. For that money, it’s pretty tough to resist.
The G8 has a clean and minimal design with a great balance of both old and new tech. You won’t find an in-display fingerprint sensor on the G8, despite launching around the same time as the Galaxy S10, but I actually prefer its more traditional rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. You get a tactile feel for where your finger should go, and you can swipe down on the sensor to pull down your notification shade — something I miss every day on newer flagships.
You also still get a 3.5mm headphone jack, backed by LG’s incredible Quad DAC that makes the G8 one of the best phones you can buy for high-fidelity wired audio. There’s an impressively loud speaker under the display as well, and you get a microSD slot for holding media like music and movies.
That display is pretty great, too. It’s a 6.1-inch OLED panel with great color reproduction that’s a bit less saturated than Samsung’s displays (in a good way, if you ask me), and with tight bezels the G8 still manages to feel relatively small and compact.
The G8 gets a lot of flack for its poorly executed motion gestures, but that’s far from the only aspect of its software. You get speedy Android 9 software — or if you’re one of the lucky ones who’s already receiving the latest update, Android 10 — with Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant built in.
There’s a lot to love about the LG G8, and with an unheard of 53% discount for Cyber Monday, now’s about as good a time as any to buy one.
Okay, time for something spicey that has just come down the grapevine. One of our favorite twitter accounts, Momomo_US, initially posted a weird-looking processor that was hosting 4 MCM-dies. The IHS of the processor looks distinctly like that of Intel and I decided to do a bit of digging around and boy did I find a lot of trails. Before I get on with all the gory details, I just wanted to remind you to mind that rumor tag and keep a jar of salt handy. Intel has never admitted to pursuing an MCM-based strategy but if this CPU turns out to be anything other than a very large scale hoax (unlikely), it would indicate that they have at the very least, tested MCM designs in their labs.

Okay before you get all excited, I will preface this story by saying that this is almost certainly a very old part – and not a leak of a new and upcoming SKU – so even in the very best case scenario it simply prooves that Intel dabbled in MCM designs. In fact, the packaging puts it at an LGA 1156-ish design and the batch number puts this CPU as having been made almost 4 years ago. The package was made in Malaysia.
Based on all this info, you are looking at either of three things:
A very old and abandoned project for MCM designs (likely),
A project that Intel has not revealed yet (anyone’s guess) or
An elaborate hoax where someone faked over 100,000 chips (unlikely).
The IHS design also puts it in the bracket of the Skylake family which makes me believe this is something they started testing shortly after that.
The lack of transistors/SMDs on the package mean this is not a working processor and simply an early demo chip – this is further corroborated by that very weird part number and the lack of an Intel Confidential logo (a standard Intel logo without the words Intel in the center). The fact that “MALAY” is mentioned on the packaging also further corroborates this theory since Intel has three testing/packaging sites based there: PG8, KM5 and KMO (in Penang and Kulim).
Here is where things get exciting though. The dies shown here are close in size to dual-core Skylake dies and 4 dies would make this an 8 core chip. The fact that this chip was made roughly four years ago means that if this was something Intel was actively pursuing they would have had ample time to perfect the technique and implement it.
The next thing I did was give the part numbers a quick google and lo and behold these processors are available on eBay as well. The fact there are so many of these CPUs (according to a Reddit thread, almost 100,000 of these quirky little processors are out there) makes it very unlikely that this is all an elaborate hoax.
I would assume that these were part of Intel’s internal testing for viable alternatives for scaling performance all those years back. It is anyone’s guess whether those tests turned out to be positive and whether Intel is working on an MCM strategy or this is a project that was ultimately abandoned.
Intel has been competing with AMD using its traditional monolithic approach to processors and unfortunately, that can’t really scale to compete with MCM based designs like the one AMD employs. Limited by the reticle size, you can only expand a monolithic die so much – not to mention yield has an inverse relationship with die size. MCM based designs on the other hand not only benefit from increased yield but are also able to scale almost infinitely. If Intel decides to shift to MCM based designs, it can quickly ramp up its performance numbers – something it direly needs to do in order to stay competitive with AMD. For their sake, I hope this project was one that ended successfully and had just been keeping a close lid on and not something that was eventually abandoned.

In the early years on feature phones, Nokia was a major force to reckon with. However, the smartphone era saw a lot of development and initially, Nokia couldn’t keep up. Many thanks to HMD Global, the Nokia smartphone brand is doing relatively well. Nevertheless, the company seems to hold tight its initial virtues (Feature Phones). According to a recent TENAA document, Nokia has a new feature phone with model number “TA-1242”.
Well, since many carriers worldwide are now dumping the 2G network, we expect this device to support at least a 3G network. The Nokia “TA-1242”, uses the T9 standard keyboard bar design. The phone size is 13.45 × 50.1 × 117.98mm and it weighs 79.17g. It uses a 2.4-inch TFT display with a resolution of 320 × 240.
In terms of configuration, the battery capacity of this phone is 800 mAh. From the TENAA images, this feature phone comes with a detachable battery design. In addition, it also has a 3MP rear camera with a flash on the left. While many may consider this device as “irrelevant”, it is relevant in many sectors. A huge part of the world still makes use of 2G and 3G networks. In these regions, feature phones are their best bet. Furthermore, older folks prefer to stick with the simple feature phones.
Back when Intel unveiled the Skylake microarchitecture, Intel proceeded to rebalance the cache structure of its CPUs within the HEDT lineup. According to Geekbench, a similar cache rebalancing may be coming to the upcoming 10nm Tiger Lake mobile CPUs.
Intel’s Tiger Lake CPU Cache Structure Optimization – HEDT-Like 10nm Cache Rebalance Incoming
Assuming Intel follows similar actions taken prior to the release of HEDT Skylake-X CPUs, Intel may continue the trend to Tiger Lake. In the case of Skylake-X, Intel reduced the amount of L3 cache in favor of increased lower-latency L2 cache, though, with Tiger Lake-Y, Intel may bring improvements in each L1, L2, and L3 caches. Previously, mobile and desktop CPUs shared the same cache structure, but with a redesign of the cache, Intel could bring increased efficiency to mobile CPUs.
Taking a look at the Geekbench report, the system in question is running a Tiger Lake-Y CPU and features four cores and eight threads. This chip features a significantly altered cache with a large 1,280KB (1.25MB) of L2 cache per core adding up to 5,120KB (5MB) of total L2 cache. This amount of L2 cache is a 400% improvement over its predecessor. Along with the significant increase of L2 cache, Intel’s sample CPU boasts a 50% L3 cache size improvement at a total of 12MB.
As for the L1 cache, Intel has improved the size of the L1 Instruction cache to 48KB, though the L1 Data cache remains at 32KB. The sample CPU tested appears to overcome a trade-off required with existing Skylake-X CPUs; increased L2 cache does not come at the expense of reduced L3 cache, therefore performance increases across the board. Other improvements expected from Tiger Lake include the introduction of PCIe 4.0, a feature currently available exclusively to AMD’s X570 and TRX40 platforms, and Intel Xe iGPUs up to 96 EUs.
Availability & Process
The Tiger Lake CPU family is anticipated to hit the market sometime within the 2020 – 2021 timeframe, though I would take this with a grain of salt as the10nm process still has a way to go before full-scale production. Tiger Lake is set to be the successor to Intel’s first-generation 10nm Ice Lake and will take shape as the optimization step within Intel’s Process-Architecture-Optimization model as the third-generation 10nm variant built by Intel (10nm++).
Samsung’s Galaxy S11 has leaked and leaked again, revealing a series of radical new features. And now Samsung confirmed its new smartphone for the first time.
Picked up by the ever-alert XDA Developers, Samsung has publicly revealed the Galaxy S11 for the first time in its application to China’s CCC. The company also disclosed its exact model number as well as its headline feature and fast charging speed.
12/1 Update: popular Samsung insider @IceUniverse has built upon the OnLeak’s design leak revealing that “key parts are wrong, the real design is more beautiful than this” explaining that the cameras will be symmetrical and the 5x optical zoom lens will be square. While the display will have a class-leading 120Hz display.
11/27 Update: acclaimed leaker @OnLeaks has teamed with CashKaro to reveal just how radical Samsung’s Galaxy S11+ will be thanks to an extreme new quintuple rear camera in a huge rectangular hump. The primary camera is understood to be 108MP with 5X optical zoom, capable of 8K video recording but, aside from ultra-wide angle and telephoto lenses, it is unknown what the other modules will do. The first of these is good news. Samsung confirms the Galaxy S11 (listed as ‘SM-G9860’) will come with 5G. This should set the bar for 2020 smartphones with almost all rivals upgrading their flagships to 5G tech, including wide-band support from Apple.
The second disclosure, is less positive. Samsung reveals that the Galaxy S11 will only have support for a maximum charging speed of 25W. Granted, this is a step-up from the ageing 15W standard of the Galaxy S10, but the Note 10 Plus introduced 45W charging so it’s going to raise eyebrows that Samsung has taken a step down from this.
I suspect the reality is Samsung will again save 45W charging for the larger Galaxy S11 Plus, but with big rivals like OnePlus, Honor and Huawei all offering phones with 40W+ charge capabilities, it’s surprising to see Samsung be so unambitious with Galaxy S11. It also confirms that revolutionary new battery tech Samsung is working on will not make it into the phone.
That said, elsewhere we know Samsung is aiming high. Samsung is equipping its Galaxy S11s with a potentially groundbreaking camera codenamed ‘Hubble’ due to its extreme zoom capabilities. There will also be new shooting modes, a new design, big performance upgrades, next-gen memory, a supersized fingerprint sensor and a real crowdpleaser: much bigger batteries.
With all this information, should you still buy the Galaxy S10 or Galaxy Note 10? On the surface no, but I will admit there are some massive Black Friday savings to be had on both models, which might just tip the balance.
