ASUS Announces ROG Phone III – 144Hz S865+ Monster

Today ASUS is announcing its newest flagship gaming-oriented phone, the ROG Phone III. A direct successor to the quite well received ROG Phone II from last year, the company is keeping the formula quite basic this year, keeping the general characteristics of the ROG Phone III similar to that to its predecessor whilst upgrading the core components such as the SoC, now featuring for the first time in a device the new Snapdragon 865+.

The new SoC upgrades the CPU and GPU speeds by 10%, upping the frequencies on the Cortex-A77 cores to up to 3.1GHz for the first time ever in a smartphone. ASUS says that it’s also vastly upgraded the heat sink of the SoC inside the phone, with it now being 6x larger than that found on the ROG Phone II. Combined with a revamped vapour chamber design, the new phone is said to be virtually immune to thermal throttling and is able to keep is peak performance figures for prolonged periods even in demanding situations.

The phone also upgrades its RAM and storage options. You’re able to feature up to 16GB of LPDDR5 memory, whilst the 512GB NAND storage has been upgraded to an UFS 3.1 unit, improving transfer speeds by up to 15%.

On the display side, ASUS has kept the same screen size and resolution as on the ROG Phone II at 6.59” and 2340 x 1080, but this time around has upped the already high 120Hz refresh rate to up to 144Hz, with also an uptick in the input touch sampling rate to up to 270Hz. This being the biggest feature of the ROG Phone II, it’s arguably seen smaller upgrades this generation.

ASUS is seemingly also keeping a very similar footprint between generations as both phones still have 171 x 78mm length and widths, although the new phone is listed as being thicker at now up to 9.85mm. Weight hasn’t changed and still falls in at a hefty 240g, mostly taken up by the huge 6000mAh battery that also hasn’t seen changes this generation. Much like its predecessor, these are gigantic phones.

On the camera side of things, we’ve seen a big improvement on the main camera unit which has been switched from the previous generation IMX586 sensor to a newer IMX686. The upgrade here lies in its larger 1/1.72” sensor size, retaining 0.8µm pixels but being improved in resolution to up to 64MP with a quad-Bayer colour filter array, binning down to 16MP for regular mode shots. As of writing we don’t have information on the optics of the camera.

The ultra-wide-angle seems to have at surface remained the same at 13MP with a 125° field of view, but again we’re lacking specifics. An addition to the camera array is a 5MP macro camera which generally is more of a gimmick rather than something that augments the capture experience.

In terms of connectivity, of course the big upgrade is the move to 5G thanks to the new X55 modem. Wi-Fi 6 also the norm now and BT has been upgraded to version 5.1. We don’t see mention of ASUS’ “wireless display” functionality with 802.11ad so it might be the company has removed this feature this generation.

One other big feature that’s been removed is the 3.5mm headphone jack. Unfortunately, as in many other vendors this has gone the way of the Dodo, and is only otherwise available through ASUS’ AeroActive Cooler 3 add-on accessory which features a pass-through USB-C and 3.5mm port.

Availability in Europe later this month, the US in September

The ROG Phone III is said to first appear in Europe later this month in the form of a Strix variant with a regular Snapdragon 865 and 8+256GB of RAM for 799€, whilst the 12+512GB and 16+512GB variants will be offered later for 999€ and 1099€. In the US, the phone will only release in September with pricing there being released at a later date.

A First Look at the New Nikon Z 5

The new Z 5 is yet another exciting camera release in this otherwise bleak year. How good is it though?

2020 might be a year to forget in many regards, but we’ve been unexpectedly fortunate in the camera industry insofar as releases. Canon have been throwing desirable camera after desirable lens at us, Sony are poised for their new version of the a7S, and now Nikon are offering a mirrorless, full frame body for what would consider to be a steal, price wise.

At just $1,396 for the body only, you’re getting a full frame mirrorless camera, that shoots 4K UHD, dual card slots, weather sealing, and various other perks. It really does combine many of the flagship features of the Z 6 and Z 7, with the addition of the dual card slots so many people wanted. The trade-off is significantly slower frames per second, but 4.5 fps is certainly nothing to turn your nose up. 

I wrote recently about the worst value cameras currently on the market, but this could honestly be the best with so much for such a reasonable price. What do you think?

Apple Confirms Stunning New MacBook Pro Details

As Apple focuses on its environmental impact and reducing the company’s carbon footprint, the MacBook Pro will lead the charge as part of a stunning commitment from Tim Cook and his team.

Today’s news from Apple confirms that it is working with aluminium suppliers on carbon-free processing. As an intermediate step, the 16-inch MacBook Pro will be the first hardware to use a low-carbon aluminium and forge a new and more environmentally friendly laptop. 

July 22 update: Aluminium International Today’s Nadine Bloxsome not only talks about the new process, but also notes the investment that Apple is making into the process alongside a number of commercial partners and government departments:

“As part of Apple’s commitment to reducing the environmental impact of our products through innovation, Alcoa helped accelerate the development of this technology. And Apple has partnered with both aluminium companies, and the governments of Canada and Quebec, to collectively invest a combined $144 million in future research and development.”

Apple is bringing its size to bear on this issue, with BBC News noting that suppliers must commit to being 100 percent renewable on their Apple production lines within ten years. 

The move comes as part of Apple’s goal to becoming 100 percent carbon neutral across the entire company. From the press release:

“Apple today unveiled its plan to become carbon neutral across its entire business, manufacturing supply chain, and product life cycle by 2030. The company is already carbon neutral today for its global corporate operations, and this new commitment means that by 2030, every Apple device sold will have net zero climate impact.”

As part of takling emissions during the production process, Apple is working with its suppliers on a carbon-free smelting process, and the first beneficiary of this technology will be the 16-inch MacBook Pro:

“Apple is supporting the development of the first-ever direct carbon-free aluminium smelting process through investments and collaboration with two of its aluminum suppliers. Today the company is announcing that the first batch of this low carbon aluminum is currently being used in production intended for use with the 16-inch MacBook Pro.”

For the moment, this MacBook Pro will be unique, but it will be joined in time by the rest of the MacBook range, then the Mac family, before the new aluminium will be found in every Apple product. It’s not an immediate switch over and it may not have a public cut-of date of ‘before and after’, so there’s no way or a consumer to specify that it wants the newer materials. Instead they need to be content with the knowledge of Apple’s march forward.

What they can choose is whether to pick up the 16-inch MacBook Pro now, or later. The current 16-inch MacBook Pro is the last new MacBook to not offer one of Intel’s tenth-generation CPUs – both the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro were refreshed to Intel’s current tech in the first half of this year. An update to the 16-inch machine from its current ninth-generation chipset is surely on the horizon.

Perhaps Tim Cook is holding back on that powerful update to showcase at the same time as the first ARM-powered MacBook Pro goes on sale to consumers during Q4 2020. What better way to reassure the geekerati that Apple, although it is pushing forward with the transition to ARM, will not be leaving behind the massive Intel user base.

New DDR5 SDRAM standard sees performance boost, dual-channel DIMM

They were two years behind schedule but the industry group overseeing memory technology development and standardization has finally announced the officials specs for the new DDR5 SDRAM standard.

The JEDEC Solid State Technology Association said I’m a report issued Tuesday the new memory specifications will provide developers with twice the performance power and lower power consumption.

Among the key improvements will be a quadrupling of maximum die density, up to 64 gigabytes from 16 gigabytes under the old standard. Each DIMM can handle two 32-bit memory channels instead of only a single 64-bit channel. Since each bank operates independently of each other, the burst length can be doubled and greater efficiency can be achieved. That means, for instance, DDR5 SDRAM can perform two 64-byte operations in the same time it takes DDR4 SDRAM to perform just one operation.

Also improving power consumption demands will be an integrated voltage regulator. Such regulators previously were situated on motherboards. The new spec allows manufacturers to incorporate as many regulators as necessary to accommodate the number of DIMMs on end systems. This should reduce the cost and simplify the design of motherboards. With each DIMM providing its own voltage regulation, JEDEC refers to this approach as “pay as you go.”

Yet to be determined is how much improvement in power efficiency will be achieved with the slightly lower power consumption, 1.1 volts, compared with 1.2 volts for DDR4. The DDR4 specs had improved upon earlier numbers by 0.3 volts, 1.2 volts compared with 1.5 volts for DDR3.

As far as maximum data rates, DDR5 will handle 6.4 Gbps, doubling the DDR4 standard, although the first modules to reach market will be capped at 4.8 Gbps.

“With the publication of JEDEC’s DDR5 standard, we are entering a new era of DDR performance and capabilities,” said Intel’s Carolyn Duran, a vice president of the Data Platforms Group. “DDR5 marks a great leap forward in memory capability, for the first time delivering a 50 percent bandwidth jump at the onset of a new technology to meet the demands of AI and high performance compute.”

The first consumer products with DDR5 specs are expected to roll off assembly lines some time in 2021.

JEDEC, composed of representatives from 300 member companies, said it recognizes the growing performance demands of intensive cloud and enterprise data center applications.

The efforts of the group “have resulted in a standard that addresses all aspects of the industry, including system requirements, manufacturing processes, circuit design, and simulation tools and test, greatly enhancing developers’ abilities to innovate and advance a wide range of technological applications,” said Desi Rhoden, chairman of the JC-42 Memory Committee and executive vice president of Montage Technology.

“With several new performance, reliability and power saving modes implemented in its design, DDR5 is ready to support and enable next-generation technologies,” he said.
