Here are the Galaxy Tab S7+’s specs

The Galaxy Tab S7 and Galaxy Tab S7+ are going to be Samsung’s flagship tablet offerings for 2020. The Tab S7 duo is expected to be unveiled alongside the Galaxy Note 20 series on August 5 at Samsung’s virtual Unpacked event, and we have already learned plenty about them, including what they might look like and some of their underlying specs. Now, reliable sources have revealed to us a mostly complete spec sheet of the Galaxy Tab S7+.

Galaxy Tab S7+ specs include Snapdragon 865+, Sub-6GHz 5G support

We had revealed a few months ago that the Galaxy Tab S7 and S7+ would feature 11-inch and 12.4-inch displays, and we now know that at least the Tab S7+’s AMOLED display will have a screen resolution of 2800 by 1752 pixels. That equates to a pixel density of around 267 ppi, so the larger display on the Tab S7+ will not be as sharp as the screen on last year’s Galaxy Tab S6 despite the higher screen resolution.

The display will obviously support the S Pen. It will have Bluetooth built-in so it can be used as a remote control, which was also the case with the S Pen on the Galaxy Tab S6. We can’t confirm if the stylus will have gesture functionality like the Galaxy Note 10’s S Pen, or if it will support features like the improved pointer functionality that will debut on the Galaxy Note 20.

Pushing all those pixels will be the Snapdragon 865+ processor. The faster variant of the Snapdragon 865, made official by Qualcomm just a few hours ago, is the first mobile chipset to break the 3GHz clock speed barrier and brings 10% faster GPU performance over the 865. It will be paired with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM, with 128GB and 256GB storage respectively. A microSD slot is no doubt going to be included, though the information we have received does not mention one.

We have also learned that the 5G variant of the Tab S7+ 5G will only support Sub-6 GHz frequency bands. That means Verizon customers in the US will not be able to use the carrier’s 5G network, at least initially, unless Samsung builds a custom variant for them like it did with the Galaxy S20. The lack of support for mmWave bands shouldn’t be an issue on other carriers and in other countries, however.

10,090 mAh battery, dual rear cameras

Both the LTE and 5G variants have a 10,090 mAh battery under the hood, and as confirmed recently, there’s no 25W or 45W super fast charging. That may or may not be a disadvantage depending on who you ask, but we think Samsung should have brought over the faster charging tech considering the kind of prices you have to pay for these flagship tablets. Even the iPad Pro, which is going to be the Tab S7/S7+’s direct competitor, supports charging speeds of up to 35W and has done so since 2018. (Update: The Tab S7+ may support 45W super fast charging after all.)

Like the Galaxy Tab S6, the Galaxy Tab S7+ will have a dual rear camera setup made up of 13MP and 5MP sensors and an 8MP front camera. It will run Android 10 and One UI 2.5 out of the box. The One UI 2.5 feature list is largely unknown, except that it will bring support for using Google’s navigation gestures in third-party launchers.

Finally, there’s an in-display fingerprint sensor on the tablet. We don’t know if it will be an optical sensor or an ultrasonic sensor like the one on the Galaxy S10, Note 10, and S20, but if we were to take an educated guess, we would say Samsung is going to stick with the former. That’s not a bad thing, as the optical fingerprint reader the company is using in 2020 is massively improved over the one it used last year.

Lenovo ThinkPad T14s with AMD Ryzen 4000 now fully customizable

When announced in February, Lenovo said that the AMD variants of the ThinkPad T14 and ThinkPad T14s were gonna be available in June. June came and went, with the two T series ThinkPad laptops nowhere to be seen. But the delay was not huge, as the new ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 and ThinkPad T14s Gen 1 with AMD Ryzen 4000 are now available to order on Lenovo’s website.

The T series is Lenovo mainstream business laptop line, with the ThinkPad T14 as the direct replacement of the ThinkPad T495. The ThinkPad T14s on the other hand is the follow up to the ThinkPad T495s. Like their Intel counterparts, they keep the same design as their predecessors, but with new processors inside. This update is much more significant on the AMD side, as the AMD T14s and AMD T14 are the first T series ThinkPad laptops ever to feature octa core CPUs.

On the US site, the less expensive ThinkPad T14 is already fully configurable. For the thinner T14s, four preconfigured models are being offered. This limits the RAM to 16 GB (only available on the most expensive model). Also, the T14s can only the ordered with a lackluster 250 cd/m² panel as of now. At least, users get the choice between the AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 4650U and the AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 4750U in both cases.

Right now, the Lenovo T14 starts at $1,319 and the Lenovo T14s has a base price of $1,789. Typically, Lenovo ThinkPads become much cheaper after a few weeks, as Lenovo begins to apply discounts. Especially in the case of the ThinkPad T14s, waiting for the configurator to become available may be a good idea.

Update: Shortly after we published our article, Lenovo added the “Build your own” option to the ThinkPad T14s. This also meant a slight decrease in the starting price, as the lowest-end Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 1 with AMD CPUs currently costs $1,529. With the customization, Lenovo made all screen options available for the T14s. Also, there is now a 32 GB RAM option, though this is only available together with the AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 4750U.

Camera shootout: Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus vs Sony Xperia 1 II

Despite building the image sensors used by a number of high profile smartphone cameras, Sony handsets haven’t ever quite perfected their mobile photography game. The Sony Xperia 1 II comes sporting Alpha-branded features and Zeiss lenses in a bid to convince us that this time is different.

Today we’re taking the phone’s camera out for a spin with the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus. Samsung’s 2020 flagship is a capable shooter and a phone that’s bound to be on nearly every high-end customer’s radar. But let’s see if the Sony Xperia 1 II is a competitive purchase for those of you big on camera quality.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus vs Sony Xperia 1 II camera: Specs

Before diving into the images, let’s review what each smartphone offers in the camera department.

The two handsets provide a familiar formula, with main, wide-angle, and telephoto zoom sensors for a highly flexible package. The phones also both include a low-resolution time-of-flight depth sensor to improve software bokeh quality.

Despite the package similarities, a closer look at the specs reveals some interesting differences. Sony’s 12MP main sensor is slightly larger and offers a slightly wider aperture than Samsung’s 12MP setup, hinting at better light capture. While Sony sticks with 12MP sensors across the board, Samsung has a 64MP zoom option for extra detail, albeit relying on a hybrid software approach to its 3x zoom. We’ll have to see if that’s a better approach versus Sony’s 1/3.4-inch 3x optical zoom sensor.

The most instantly noticeable difference between the Galaxy S20 Plus and Xperia 1 II cameras is their color processing. Samsung opts for punchy colors that are, frankly, over the top in most situations. You can see this noticeably in overly blue skies, plant greens, and deep pinks/reds. The Xperia 1 II is more conservative and realistic with its color pallet, but both can appear a little too warm in some instances. Sony’s handset also doesn’t do nearly as well with HDR compared to Samsung, which offers excellent exposure control.

The Galaxy S20 Plus also offers fractionally better detail capture and lower noise than the Xperia 1 II, although both cameras are quite good in this regard and you really have to crop in to notice. These differences become more pronounced with the wide-angle cameras. Sony’s images have notable grain and slightly less noticeable processing. However, the Xperia 1 II struggles with focus and detail compared to Samsung’s implementation. Neither wide-angle lens is perfect, though, and you’ll find chromatic aberration and lens distortion aplenty.

I also took a couple of quick bokeh shots to test out how well these phones handle edge detection and blue quality. Edge detection is quite good on both phones, although the Xperia 1 II’s is a fraction cleaner. The added depth sensors help both phones with bokeh accuracy. However, Sony opts for a softer bokeh by default, which looks more natural, and has a more realistic progression from in to out of focus.

Zoom

The biggest hardware difference with the Galaxy S20 Plus vs Xperia 1 II is the zoom cameras. Sony opts for a lower resolution but optical 3x zoom, while Samsung uses a high resolution and hybrid zoom tech. The results are… interesting.

At full-frame, both phones appear to offer comparable levels of detail. Instead, it’s the familiar processing difference, such as color and HDR/exposure, that is most obviously noticeable between the two. Overall, Samsung is the most consistent across all three of its cameras, but that isn’t to say Sony’s results look bad in most cases either.

However, cropping in to 100% on these zoom images reveals the shortcomings of Samsung’s hybrid approach. Details definitely don’t hold up as well on the Galaxy S20 Plus and there are clear signs of heavy processing from the hybrid upscaling. It’s not the worst I’ve seen, but it doesn’t look great.

The Xperia 1 II holds up much better thanks to its optical zoom length, with far fewer signs of heavy processing. However, Samsung’s hybrid approach retains a consistent look across zoom levels while there’s an obvious jump up in quality at 3x with the Xperia 1 II. Oddly, Sony’s camera app doesn’t actually use the optical lens if you pinch-zoom up to 3x. You have to click the 3x icon to obtain the best zoom quality. Likewise for accessing the wide-angle lens.

Low light

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus and Sony Xperia 1 II rely on long exposure night modes for shooting in the dark, resulting in some blur and loss of accuracy. Movement blur affects the Xperia model the most, suggesting a slightly inferior image recomposition algorithm. See the first image. The lack of multi-frame HDR capture doesn’t help here either. But when it comes to detail and noise, both sensors again perform very closely. This is a major upgrade from previous Sony flagships, which lacked a dedicated low light shooting mode.

Sony’s handset nudges ahead with dynamic range and color when shooting in very low light. You can notice this particularly in the second image, where the flowers retain their color much better. However, Samsung does a better job of correcting for overly warm light sources.

Despite my regular complaint about Samsung’s oversaturation, its latest flagship comes out ahead in our Galaxy S20 Plus vs Xperia 1 II showdown. The S20 Plus offers consistent image quality and processing across all three of its cameras, the software does everything you want, and the phone offers good HDR and Night Mode options.

The Sony Xperia 1 II scores a few points over the S20 Plus, however. The phone’s color saturation and accuracy are notably better and it offers superior dynamic range in low light. The phone’s software bokeh is a tad better too. Sony is also lighter on the post-processing, exposing a few more flaws in exchange for some nice looking grain.

Sony’s lack of decent HDR leads to exposure problems.

I really want to like the Xperia 1 II’s camera, as it does a lot right. However, the lack of a decent HDR implementation results in far too many shots with blown-out highlights or poorly-exposed shadows. These simply look bad next to any modern smartphone camera. There is a more functional multi-frame HDR mode in the Photo Pro app, but this really should be a standard feature in the default app too. Likewise, the odd situation with activating the zoom lens suggests that Sony still isn’t paying enough attention to the finer details of its camera experience.

Lenovo improves ThinkPads running Linux but issues with problem machines remain

Last month, when Lenovo announced it was going to certify its ThinkPad lineup for use with Linux operating systems, my mind turned to one device, the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2.

At the end of last year, I chronicled my issues with the device, and while it was fair criticism at the time that my use of Fedora might not have been the best, with news that Lenovo was going to offer to preload Ubuntu, Red Hat, and Fedora distributions, that choice was more relevant than I could have imagined at the time.

Since its announcement, a surprising number of firmware updates have appeared for the X1 Extreme.

It went unmentioned last year, but the Synaptics fingerprint reader on the laptop was completely useless until around two weeks ago. That brand of reader had long been a pain point when combined with Linux, so it is nice to see some support finally land.

As usual with new Linux compatibility, there are a couple of caveats. You can log in with your fingerprint, but GNOME 3 will not unlock its keyring until you type in a password, so it is best to type in a password when you log in, and use the fingerprint to unlock the lock screen thereafter. On the other end, once a fingerprint is registered, sudo will demand a fingerprint instead of a password. It’s really hard to have your cake and eat it too when it comes to desktop Linux.

But the biggest pain point with the X1 Extreme by far was the hybrid graphics setup, which at the time appeared to be a choice between using only the Nvidia GPU or the Intel integrated graphics.

After scouring the web on and off for almost six months, I am pleased to report that a solution was found — the xorg.conf lines are more or less what’s in the documentation but I needed a BusID line for both the Nvidia and Intel device blocks.

I’ve been using it like this for a couple of months. The display will sometimes freeze for a few microseconds however, and every time, it feels like the X server has crashed until the cursor thankfully shifts when it catches up. So even when it does work, it is not the best experience on offer.

If not for the issues with having to connect external displays I discussed last year, one would be better off using either the discrete or integrated GPU full-time, rather than messing with Nvidia Prime output and X server configurations.

It will be very intriguing how a certified ThinkPad laptop with hybrid graphics performs when Lenovo begins to release them, but properly setting up the X server configuration would have saved many hours of searching for solutions and trial and error testing.

This leaves just one gaping issue with the device. An entirely known quantity but it still needs to be addressed: Battery life.

Part of the problem is that due to running hybrid graphics, and having no way in Nvidia’s control panel or the BIOS to switch off the discrete GPU entirely, it is always sucking down an amount of power, even if tiny.

Head over to the Lenovo site and it will claim that this device provides up to 14 hours. That’s at least double, if not triple, what you will get in the real world.

I once saw the power remaining widget say 16 hours in the first minute after I charged it to 100% and removed the power cord — and I suspect a Lenovo engineer once did too, screenshotted it like I did, and wrote it onto a spec sheet. A minute later though, the fleeting fantasy was over and the laptop reported that less than 6 hours battery remained.

After months of usage, any time the laptop says over 4 hours of battery remains is a good time. Lurk in the Lenovo forums and you will see that regardless of whether it is Linux or Windows, this sort of number is par for the course.

However, there were a number of things I did to get that number as high as I could.

The big one is to install powertop to monitor power usage and get an idea of what is going on. One thing I would recommend is to enable the powertop service to automatically set a number of options to maximise power use.

One thing powertop showed was nine watts was headed to the virbr0 networking device. This virtual device provides connectivity to hypervisors, something I don’t run with any frequency on here, so I switched it off. For similar reasoning, the ethernet port was disabled in the BIOS. Powertop also confirmed that Wi-Fi was sucking down a bunch of power and turning it off does make a genuine difference.

All up, if you disable all networking, put the screen down as low as you can possibly read it without giving yourself instant eye strain, and cross your fingers and toes, you might be able to eek out five and a half hours of battery life. This still means, should conferences ever return, you’ll be heading to a power socket at lunchtime.

In the past hour, I’ve seen over 20% of the battery dissipate, and that is more or less the standard discharge rate now. At least it is now under 30% per hour.

I point all this out because I am a person who doesn’t mind donning the gumboots and tinkering away in the Linux plumbing. After six months of this, I feel I have taken it to a point where there is little potential performance left to squeeze out of the laptop.

Lenovo needs to ensure it is able to provide a proper, workable, and optimised Linux setup on day one. Not months later when users scour forum posts looking for an issue that closely resembles the one they are having at the present time.

Doing it for the Intel-only machine, like the regular X1 Carbon, should be a cinch, but since the company said it was going to certify its entire ThinkPad range, it will have to deal with problem children like the X1 Extreme sooner or later.
