Removing Cortana from Windows 10 is now easier than ever

Cortana on Windows 10 has been updated as a productivity tool and it is now an integral part of Microsoft’s vision for conversational computing and productivity.

Voice assistants are a great convenience when they work as intended. A wide choice of assistants has risen over the past few years, including Cortana, Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant, but Cortana didn’t become as popular as the rival digital assistants.

As a result, Microsoft has been moving away from consumer-focused features and the assistant is slowly turning into a tool exclusively for productivity that will work best with a Microsoft 365 subscription.

Cortana is now a regular system app that can be updated through the Microsoft Store in Windows 10 version 2004. Cortana also comes with a new chat-based interface, improved keyboard support, and you can also move it around the desktop.

Unfortunately, you can no longer use Cortana to read your emails, play music in Groove Music, and you cannot even launch apps using the chat or voice-based commands.

If you’re not planning on using the assistant, you can now easily remove it from Windows 10 May 2020 Update. Before uninstalling Cortana, make sure that you right-click the taskbar and disable the Cortana button feature.

How to uninstall Cortana

To remove Cortana from Windows 10 after upgrading to version 2004, follow these steps:

Open Windows Search.

Search for PowerShell and run it with administrator privilege.

Type the following command to remove the assistant and press enter: Get-AppxPackage -allusers Microsoft.549981C3F5F10 | Remove-AppxPackage

Close PowerShell.

Reboot.

Once you complete the above, you’ll no longer find Cortana as an installed app on Windows 10 or within the system settings.

Do note that this hack doesn’t get rid of all traces of Cortana. You’ll still have the Cortana button in the taskbar, but you can always turn it off from the taskbar’s context menu and ignore that option.

Also, Win+C shortcut will do nothing after removing the Cortana app, but you can use PowerToys Keyboard Remapper and reuse the shortcut for other Windows features.

For example, if your caps lock key is broken, you can configure PowerToys to enable caps lock when you press Win+C.

If you would like to restore Cortana functionality, simply head to the Microsoft Store and download the assistant again.

Photographer and educator Matt Granger just got his hands on the new Canon EOS R5 and, trying to ignore all of the chat about overheating, set about comparing it for shooting stills directly with the Sony a7R IV. Check out this short video to get his initial impressions.

The Canon EOS R5 is pretty hard to get ahold of right now, and body-only it will set you back $3,899. The Sony a7R IV, released in September last year, is a few hundred dollars cheaper, offers an extra 16 megapixels (61 over the R5’s 45), and, unlike the Canon, will arrive in a matter of days.

Despite his best efforts to avoid getting drawn into the ongoing debate about overheating, Granger is — to his own frustration — unable to avoid it. The back and forth continues as to whether Canon has been somewhat disingenuous with its marketing of the R5’s video capabilities, but if there’s one advantage to the shortage of R5 units available, it’s that customers have plenty of time to do their research into whether the limitations make the new Canon flagship mirrorless camera the right choice for them.

Huawei’s 24-Core 7nm Kunpeng CPU Allegedly Beats Core i9-9900K In Multi-Core Performance

Chinese news outlet IThome received word that Huawei is on the brink if launching the brand’s new desktop PC (internally known as Pangu) for the domestic market. The system utilizes a variant of the company’s Kunpeng 920, which is also known as the Hi1620. The report claims that the Kunpeng 920 3211K’s multi-core performance is slightly better than the Intel Core i9-9900K Coffee Lake processor.

The Kunpeng 920, which is based on Arm’s Neoverse N1 (codename Ares) microarchitecture, boasts core configurations that span from 24 up to 64 cores, running between 2.4 GHz and 3 GHz. TSMC used to produce Kunpeng 920 for Huawei on its 7nm process node before cutting off all ties with Chinese tech giant due to new U.S. regulations.

The Kunpeng 920 3211K in particular has 24 cores that max out at 2.6 GHz. Huawei pairs the processor with 8GB of SO-DIMM memory, a 512GB Samsung SSD and AMD’s Radeon 520 mobile graphics card.

Huawei tailors the Pangu to government and enterprise markets, meaning the system is equipped with China’s homemade Unified Operating System (UOS). User expansion and customization on the Pangu is close to zero. The Kunpeng 920 3211K is soldered to the motherboard and doesn’t support other graphics cards. The UOS is cemented into the PC so you can’t install Windows on it either. We suspect you may be able to upgrade the memory or SSD, but that’s about it.

The purported images of the Pangu show three USB Type-A ports, one USB Type-C port and a single 3.5mm headphone jack in the front of the case. There is also room for an optical drive. The rear of the case holds four USB Type-A ports, one Ethernet port, three 3.5mm audio jacks and a D-Sub port. IThome’s report states that the Pangu comes with a 23.8-inch monitor with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and 70% NTSC color gamut.

Pricing and the exact release date for the Pangu is unknown. The IThome reader only insinuated that the Pangu will launch soon.

How to install the watchOS 7 public beta

How to install the watchOS 7 public beta

Important Note: There is no way to downgrade to watchOS 6 after installing the watchOS 7 public (or developer) beta.

You’ll need to be running the iOS 14 beta on your iPhone that’s connected to your Apple Watch (walkthrough on installing iOS 14 public beta)

On your iPhone running iOS 14, head to Apple’s public beta website and sign in

Tap watchOS from the Enroll your devices page, then swipe down and tap the enroll your Apple Watch link

Swipe down a bit and tap Download Profile

Follow the prompts to install the watchOS 7 public beta

Tap Allow to download the profile

Tap Install in the top right corner, enter your passcode if needed

Read the consent agreement, then tap Install two more times

Tap Done then General in the top left

Head to the Watch app on your iPhone, choose General > Software update

You should see watchOS 7 available, put your Apple Watch on the charger, keep your iPhone nearby, tap Download and Install

Here’s how the process looks:

After you open Apple’s public beta website you can tap the drop-down arrow in the top right corner to sign in/sign up.

Next, choose watchOS and swipe down.

Now follow the prompts to install the watchOS 7 beta profile which will make the update show up in the Watch app. You’ll also need to restart your Apple Watch as part of the process.

Finally, head to the Watch app on your iPhone and navigate to General > Software Update. Make sure your Apple Watch is charging and near your iPhone, tap “Download and Install.”

Windows 10 update means copy-and-paste will never be the same again

Microsoft may be planning to release Windows 10X in the spring of 2021 but some of the new operating system’s features could be coming to Windows 10 sooner than that including a new panel that completely changes how copying and pasting works.

As reported by Windows Latest, in Windows 10 Build 20185 the software giant has added a new panel that allows users to insert emojis, GIFs and even content from their clipboards. The new panel also includes several new features to make it easier for users to add content to their messages, documents and emails.

In addition to being able to access your most recently used emoji and GIFs as well as search for new ones, the panel includes a feature called “Clipboard history” that displays a list of items that users have recently copied to the clipboard.

While there are already clipboard replacements available for Windows, the new panel will offer similar functionality natively and can even be synced across devices.

Windows 10 clipboard update

The clipboard in Windows 10 already allows users to access their clipboard history at any time by pressing the Windows key and V. Clipboard items can also be shared across Windows 10 devices by going to system settings and choosing “Automatically sync text that I copy” in the clipboard menu under the “Sync across devices” tab. However, clipboard history currently stores a maximum of 25 entries and the oldest items are deleted as new ones appear.

The new clipboard history coming to Windows 10 soon not only supports text but also images and HTML content. Users can also delete the history of the clipboard or turn off the feature entirely from the settings menu.

If you used Google’s keyboard app Gboard before, the new panel in Windows will work in much the same way as GIFs and emojis can be accessed and inserted into your messages or documents very quickly and easily.

The new panel is expected to arrive with Windows 10’s next feature update although at this time, it is still unknown as to when Microsoft will release it.

What is the run time of SONY battery?

SONY batteries have two main ratings on them: Volts and Amperes. Because size and weight of batteries is limited when compared to larger batteries such as car batteries, most companies show their ratings with Volts and Milliamperes. One thousand Milliamperes equals 1 Ampere. When buying a battery, select batteries with the most Milliamperes (or mAh). Batteries are also rated by Watt-Hours, perhaps the simplest rating of all. This is found by multiplying the Volts and the Amperes together. For example:

  • 14.4 Volts, 4000mAh (Note: 4000mAh is equal to 4.0 Amperes).
  • 14.4 x 4.0 = 57.60 Watt-Hours

Watt-Hours signifies the energy needed to power one watt for one hour.

New Apple Leak Reveals iPhone 12 Design Shock

iPhone 12 surprises keep coming (both good news, bad news and unexpected twists), but now we know perhaps the biggest problem with Apple’s new iPhones. 

Mysterious industry insider ‘Mr White’ has continued his impressive track record leaking Apple hardware, by revealing the chassis for the coming iPhone 12. While this confirms the range’s move to a more angular new design, he also confirms Face ID will be the same size and, as a consequence, the large notch introduced with the iPhone X in 2017 will not be getting any smaller in 2020. 

08/08 Update: a further image of an iPhone 12 Pro screen panel prototype has now leaked and, unfortunately, it also looks like Apple is sticking with the larger notch on its Pro models as well. The chassis again confirms the angular design Apple will introduce for the range, which takes influence from both the iPhone 4 and the current iPad Pro line-up. That said, with Apple also now all but certain to ditch fast refresh rates on all iPhone 12 models, the iPhone 12 Pro editions, in particular, are losing their shine. Especially considering their significantly higher asking prices. Given this new leaked image is a prototype, there may be some hope that Apple has made a late, more ambitious, change for the final iPhone 12 designs but the signs are not looking good.

08/09 Update: further iPhone 12 components are now leaking as the models enter mass production. Consequently, Apple reseller JinStore has now attained images of Apple’s A14 chipset, which is tipped to deliver a multi-generational leap in performance. The A14 will also be Apple’s first 5nm chip, which will bring greater power efficiency (needed with those smaller batteries), particularly when multitasking. With other iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro features falling by the wayside as we approach release, a lot of weight is going to be placed on the A14 to dazzle and it looks set to do just that. The A14 isn’t the kind of eye-catching feature Apple usually likes to sell its iPhones on, especially with the A13 in the iPhone 11 range and iPhone SE already far ahead of the competition, but expect the company to break with tradition in 2020.

Apple had been widely expected to shrink the notch for the iPhone 12 line-up and almost every render showed this would result in a significantly better design. Moreover, with recent leaks also revealing Apple will increase prices while also shrinking battery capacities, the company’s decision to stick with the same notch for the fourth successive generation may be a deal breaker for some potential upgraders. 

That said, for notch haters, there is still some cause for optimism. While Mr White did not reveal which iPhone 12 model the chassis is from, it appears to be the new 5.4-inch entry level phone. So it is possible Apple does have plans to introduce a smaller notch with the more expensive iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. 

Beyond this, however, there remain compelling reasons to upgrade. Most notably, all iPhone 12 models will come with 5G (albeit different versions), a multi-generational performance leap, a wider range of screen sizes and faster (potentially magnetic) charging. Pro models will also add some radical new camera tech. 

All of which leaves users at a crossroads. At least with Apple officially delaying the iPhone 12 release and the possibility of a split launch increasing, you will have longer to make your mind up.
