Samsung’s new Galaxy Book Flex and Ion laptops bring better designs to the lineup

Samsung has a pair of new laptops — the Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion — that will replace the company’s old Samsung Notebook 9 Pen and Notebook 9 models, respectively. Samsung is making some big changes on these laptops, both inside and out. There are the expected boosts in specs, of course, as well as very welcome redesigns that bring the two models more in line with the modern design language that Samsung introduced earlier this year with the Notebook 9 Pro.

The new Galaxy Books are Samsung’s first laptops to use QLED displays, which is the same display tech that the company uses on its line of high-end flat-screen TVs. Samsung says they should be brighter (with a maximum of 600 nitts using a special “Outdoor Mode” and up to 400 nitts regularly) and more color accurate than before.

Both laptops also feature Intel’s latest 10th Gen chips: the convertible Galaxy Book Flex has 10nm Ice Lake processors, while the Galaxy Book Ion will have the 14nm Comet Lake chipsets based on the older architecture. Both laptops (in their 13- and 15-inch sizes) are certified as part of Intel’s Project Athena program, meaning you should get up to nine hours of real-world battery life.

The third big change is the inclusion of a new Wireless PowerShare touchpad that doubles as a full-fledged Qi wireless charger for any of your wirelessly charging gadgets. It’s an admittedly odd feature: you have to first enable the wireless charging mode with a keyboard combination, so it’s not as simple as just dropping your phone on top of the pad. And when you’re charging a device, you can’t use the touchpad at all, which limits the functionality of your laptop (unless you have an external mouse handy). Given that the rest of the laptops are made out of metal, the glass trackpad was the only place to put it. Plus, if you do desperately need to charge your Galaxy Watch Active 2 or AirPods, you’ll have the option.

Lastly, there are some changes to the S Pen that is included with the Galaxy Book Flex. It now has similar Air Action gestures to the Galaxy Note 10, allowing you to control your laptop with motion gestures using the stylus.

As for the actual designs, they’re big improvements on the old models. Like the Notebook 9 Pro, they’re all-metal designs, but Samsung’s ancient design style has finally been given the axe. Compare the new Galaxy Book Flex against the Notebook 9 Pen from last year, and it’s no contest. The bubbly-looking curved and corners are replaced with the sharper edges that it introduced earlier this year. There’s also far smaller screen bezels, which helps reduce the overall size of the laptop.

Better yet, Samsung has actually improved on its first attempt with these models. Where the Notebook 9 Pro looked like a MacBook Pro rip-off, the new Galaxy Book Flex, with its striking blue hues, finally looks like its own unique product.

Similarly, the non-touchscreen Galaxy Book Ion looks to stand out with a cleverly raised design that sees the back of the display prop up the keyboard slightly when opened. There’s also a nice blue accent strip on the back that helps it stand out from the crowd.

As for the rest of the specs: both laptops will come in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes, with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB NVMe SSDs. (Although, as noted before, the folding Flex laptops will have Intel’s newer 10nm processors.) The 15-inch models will also have optional Nvidia MX250 external GPUs, although Samsung has yet to announce exact configurations for any of the laptops just yet.

There’s no word on pricing, although Samsung says that prices should be within the same ballpark as the Notebook 9 Pen and Notebook 9 clamshell laptops that the new models will replace.

More curious is the release date, or lack thereof: Samsung only gave an “early 2020” window, which is puzzlingly far away from today’s announcement. Samsung also missed another Galaxy Book release date recently: the company’s ARM-powered Galaxy Book S was originally supposed to ship in September, and we still have no release date almost two months later.

Dell Vostro 15 7590 With i7-9750H, GTX 1650 on Sale for $1,099

The Vostro 15 7590, which Dell normally sells for $1,998.57, has gone on sale for $1,099. That means if you’re in the market for a new business-class laptop, you’re in luck.

The Vostro 15 7590 is a 15.6-inch laptop that measures 9.4 x 14.1 x 0.7 inches (239 x 358 x 18mm) and weighs 4.1 pounds (1.85 kg). It sports a slim body with narrow bezels and an anti-glare display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080.

The laptop is powered by a 9th-Generation Intel Core i7-9750H processor. The six-core, 12-thread chip clocks in with a 2.6 GHz base clock and 4.5 GHz boost clock. The processor is accompanied with 16GB of DDR4-2666 memory and a 512GB PCIe-NVMe M.2 SSD.

Although Dell markets the Vostro 15 7590 as a business laptop, it offers some decent gaming, thanks to the inclusion of Nvidia’s Turing-powered GTX 1650 graphics. The graphics card sports 896 CUDA cores and 4GB of GDDR5 memory, which should be enough for all your casual gaming needs.

Other useful features include a lid-open sensor that automatically turns on your laptop, full 10-key numeric keypad, four-element lens webcam, TPM 2.0 module and optional fingerprint reader.

The laptop comes with 802.11ac 2×2 Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. It’s also equipped with a microSD card reader that’s compatible with the SD, SDHC and SDXC formats. USB-wise there are three USB 3.1 Type-A ports and one Thunderbolt (USB 3.1 Type-C) port. There is also a HDMI port for video output and a 3.5mm audio jack for connecting headsets.

Dell has slapped a six-cell 97 Whr battery on the Vostro 15 7590, which, according to the manufacturer, can get you through an entire working day.

The Lenovo Chromebook C340-11 is finally on sale and it’s a pink Chromebook actually worth buying

I’ve been practically vibrating with anticipation to try the follow-up to last year’s hit Chromebook the Lenovo C330, which has been my daily driver since early February and leads our Best Chromebooks roundup, since the C340 line was announced at IFA with a September launch date. Alas, the weeks passed with no hint of the C340-11 on Lenovo’s website or any listings on Amazon, though the larger Lenovo Chromebook C340-15 arrived on Amazon by the beginning of October as expected.

Until today.

Lenovo is finally listing and selling the C340-11 on its website, and boy, howdy, was it worth waiting for! A 64GB C340-11 in Sand Pink will only run you $320, meaning you can grab a 64B Pink 2-in-1 Chromebook that will be supported until June 2025 for less than half the price of Google’s new Pixelbook Go.

I’m going to get my hands on one of these just as soon as I possibly can and report back how the C340 handles in the real world, but if it’s anything like last year’s model, this is going to be the best Chromebook to buy your child or partner for Christmas: a compact workhorse of a Chromebook with a sturdy build and a shiny shell.

Oh, and if you prefer Platnium Grey over Pink, you can save an extra $20 buying the silver 64GB C340-11 from Costco instead. You can also grab last year’s Blizzard White C330 for $250 over at Amazon, but I’d expect stock of the 64GB model to start running dry soon as Lenovo ramps up the new and improved version.

Best 15-inch laptops for 2019

When 13 inches is too small and 17 is too big, a 15-incher from Dell, Lenovo, Apple, Acer or others may be just the right blend of size and power you’re looking for.

Why 15? As the middle child between more expensive, big-screen 17-inch models and smaller, less powerful laptops that are 13 inches, 15 inches strikes the Goldilocks balance between price, performance and size for many people — at least in the US. Some other regions find 14 inches more to their liking, which is why we have so many similar options to choose from in both sizes.

Many of these are on the pricey side; if you’re looking for a broader set of options, check out our picks for budget laptops and budget gaming laptops. And picking just a handful out of a sea of hundreds pretty much ensures you’ll miss some important options, especially if you’re looking for something more tailored to specific needs, so you should also head over to see our best gaming laptops, two-in-ones and Chromebooks, as well as the best choices for college students, creatives and MacBook Pro alternatives for the Windows set. Plus, if you just want pure power or long battery life, our rankings of battery life and performance are for you.

Because configurations, specs, designs and availability tend to change so frequently, we’ve limited our choices to laptops we’ve reviewed in the past year — the individual stories above cover a longer span of time. So, for instance, the LG Gram 15, which blew us away with its battery life and light weight in March 2018, isn’t here because we haven’t run the battery tests on current configurations and specs, which, of course, directly affect it.

Best 15-inch for work and play

Razer Blade 15 Advanced

Razer’s featureless-slab aesthetic slips seamlessly fits into almost any environment, making it the best 15 inch laptop for work and play. If you opt for one of the higher-end configurations and specs, Razer Blade 15 Advanced is (unsurprisingly) a great device for both creative work and gaming. If you’re willing to go with a black Razer Blade and an emptied wallet, you can get an Adobe RGB calibrated 4K OLED display and a GeForce RTX 2070 for $3,300.

Best 15-inch Chromebook

Lenovo Yoga Chromebook C630

The Lenovo Yoga Chromebook C630 further expands the boundaries of what you can expect from a Chromebook in 2019. The standout feature is a terrific convertible, 15.6-inch, 4K display — but it also has a complement of solid components and a sturdy, tasteful aluminum chassis (though the keyboard is a little mushy and you can’t run those few Windows- and MacOS-only applications on the Chrome OS). And like most Chromebooks, it costs hundreds less than a similarly configured Windows counterpart.

Best dual screen

Asus ZenBook Pro Duo

Given that there are only really two dual-screen options available at the moment — the other is the fast HP Omen X 2S gaming laptop — choosing one seems kind of moot. But the ZenBook Pro Duo has a lot going for it in general, including a color-accurate OLED screen plus a smaller IPS panel below it. The secondary display may only be about half an extra screen, but it’s still really useful for video editing and other tasks when you want to fit more video or photos on the main 15-inch monitor or work in a small space. The ZenBook Pro Duo’s primary OLED touchscreen display provides excellent color accuracy for Adobe RGB and P3, plus it’s got a high-powered i9-9980HK 8-core processor, making it a portable powerhouse. It’s relatively heavy for its class at 5.5 pounds, though, and the high-end model we loved costs $3,000 — don’t expect blazing speed (though it should be respectable) from the less expensive Core i processor, RTX 2060 configuration. Plus, the battery life isn’t very good and the keyboard can be uncomfortable without the wrist rest.

Best balance of speed and battery life

Apple MacBook Pro

I’m not a fan of the keyboard or Touch Bar, but the combination of the MacBook Pro’s hardware and MacOS extracts the maximum performance from the components while delivering class-leading battery life in a way Windows systems never seem to do, and the screen remains terrific. You pay for it, though — base price for the 15-inch Macbook Pro model is $2,399 and that’s with a meager 256GB SSD.

Best 15-inch gaming performer

Acer Predator Triton 500

The Acer Predator Triton 500 is a gaming powerhouse in a thin and light package, at least in the pricey full-on configuration and specs including an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q. The keyboard isn’t terrific and it can run hot and loud, and like any gaming laptop the battery life is pretty short. But if you need maximum graphics and CPU performance in a reasonably portable device, this is a good option.

Best 15-inch budget gaming

Dell G5 15 5590

Dell’s G series comprises some of the best mainstream gaming laptops you can find thanks to its strong performance, a variety of component options and a more travel- and user-friendly design than most. Plus, its battery life is a lot better than the typical gaming laptop, and a solidly performance base configuration starts at less than $1,000.

Bonus 14-inch: Lightest and best battery life

Lenovo Yoga C930

Dropping down to 14 inches does confer some benefits, notably lighter weight, and since the components tend to be less powerful than in the 15-inch models, battery life is typically much better. And for a two-in-one, the slightly smaller size makes it less awkward when using it as a tablet. The Yoga C930 has a great design in addition to its weight and battery-life advantages; small touches like the bundled active pen has a storage and charging slot in the body and physical webcam shutter make it stand out from the crowd.

Philips Brilliance 272P7VUBNB: A Sub-$350 27-Inch 4K IPS Monitor with 65W USB PD & GbE

In previous years monitor capabilities such as 4K resolutions, USB-C docking, and GbE connectivity have been premium features that have only been available in high-end monitors. However the price of all of those technologies is continuing to come down, and as such, those features are filtering down to increasingly mainstream monitors. To that end, Philips is launching its Brilliance 272P7VUBNB 4K display, a moderately priced 27-inch monitor with a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C connector, a GbE port, and a PowerSensor that reduces its brightness when no user is present.

Designed primarily for office and productivity workloads, the Philips Brilliance 272P7VUBNB monitor uses a 27-inch IPS panel with a 3840×2160 resolution, 350 nits brightness, a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 178°/178° horizontal/vertical viewing angles, a 5 ms GtG response time, and a 60 Hz refresh rate. Since the LCD is not aimed at gamers or multimedia enthusiasts, it does not support a variable refresh rate technology and is not meant for HDR content. Nonetheless, it comes factory calibrated with a Delta E <2 accuracy, can display 1.07 billion colors, and reproduce 122% of the sRGB color gamut as well as 103% of the NTSC color gamut. Moreover, the panel has an 3H anti-glare coating, something that is valuable in office monitors.

The Brilliance 272P7VUBNB monitor comes equipped with a GbE port to provide Ethernet connectivity to laptops that do not have an appropriate adapter built-in. Since the GbE port is fed via USB, Phillips has decided to double-down on USB altogether, offering a USB-C input to connect upstream to a host machine and provide single-cable funcitonality. The display’s USB-C port can deliver up to 65 W of power to the host, which is enough for the majority of 13.3-inch and 14-inch mobile PCs. The USB upstream port is also used to feed a dual-port USB 3.2 Type-A hub.

Otherwise, a DisplayPort 1.2 input and an HDMI 2.0 port are also available so that the monitor can be used with older devices. The monitor also offers a headphone output, but no integrated speakers

Traditionally for Philips’ P-series monitors, the Brilliance 272P7VUBNB comes equipped with the company’s SmartErgoBase stand that can regulate height, tilt, swivel, and can enable both landscape and portrait modes, allowing the monitor to be positioned in numerous different ways.

The Philips Brilliance 272P7VUBNB carries an MSRP of $349.99, but it is now available at Amazon for $319.99.

Pick up this XPS Tower with a GTX 1660 for less than $700 from Dell

Looking for a cheap gaming desktop deal? Dell’s had a recent string of killer deals on a number of their desktops and laptops. This XPS Tower normally goes for $1,099.99, but Dell is slashing the price down to $685, courtesy of this killer coupon code: XPSDTAFF0. That’s a $400 savings for a solid 1080p budget system.

The XPS Tower has an Intel Core i5-9400, 8GB RAM (upgradable to 64 GB), 1TB HDD, and a GTX 1660—a nice build for budget gamers who still want the room to upgrade. You can play all your favorite games in 1080p at medium presets without major issues. A larger SSD instead of the 256GB one in the build would have been great, but for under $700 that’s still a good list of components.

What we like about the XPS Tower is how upgrade friendly it is. It uses a swing-out power supply (meaning it literally swings out of the case) that lets you easily upgrade your rig without any tools, and with enough room if you want to upgrade to one of the best graphic cards.

At this price, you can easily upgrade this rig with more RAM or a newer, better graphics card with the money you save for Black Friday. We will be painstakingly tracking all the best deals.

Save $380 on these slick 2-in-1 laptops from Lenovo

2-in-1 laptops are versatile, powerful and look super cool. They tend to be a little more expensive than your traditional workhorse laptop, but Lenovo is currently running a promotion that will let you grab one of their flagship Yogabooks for just $700 ($380 off). Using code YOGABOO35 will save you 35 percent off either of Lenovo’s Yoga 730 laptops.

These 13-inch laptops are sleek and flexible and make for excellent workstations or even makeshift tablets. Both of the models on offer here are virtually identical, each sporting a 13.3-inch 1080p multi-touch screen, a 1.8Ghz Intel CPU and integrated graphics. However, the larger of the two, available for around $850 with the associated code, carries a 512GB SSD instead of the smaller 256GB.

While neither of these laptops are suited for intense gaming, they are awesome for anyone who needs to get work done on the go, weighing less than three pounds. The Yoga 730 features a pair of USB-C ports for charging or data transfer, as well as a single USB-A port, and its 11 hours of battery life gives you tons of flexibility between charging

While browsing and light workloads are this laptop’s bread and butter, the Yoga 730 is still suited for games with lower system requirements like Hearthstone—just don’t expect awesome performance when you’re trying to play Apex Legends. This is a spectacular offer if you’re looking to get a jump on the best Black Friday deals, and is one of the lowest prices we’ve seen for this slick notebook.

This Asus ROG laptop with an RTX 2070 is on sale for $1,500 on Amazon

There have been plenty of great deals on mid-range gaming laptops lately, but if you’re looking for something high-end, today might be your day. One model of the Asus ROG Strix Scar II laptop with an RTX 2070 graphics card is now $1,499.99 on Amazon. That’s a $100 drop from the previous price, and $500 below the original MSRP.

The hardware of this laptop includes an Intel Core i7-8750H processor, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 graphics card with 8GB of VRAM, 16GB of 2666MHz DDR4 memory, a 512GB PCIe SSD, and support for both 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0. The screen is a large 15.6-inch 1080p “IPS-Type” display running at 144Hz.

The combination of a high-end Intel CPU with one of Nvidia’s best graphics cards means this laptop is ready for any game you throw at it, or really any other task. To get an idea for the kind of performance you can expect, check out our RTX 2070 review from last year (keep in mind laptop CPUs/GPUs are always a bit less powerful than their desktop counterparts).

This ASUS laptop with a GTX 1660 Ti is just $849 right now

Are you looking for a new gaming laptop, but you don’t have $1,000 (or more) to spend? If so, you might be interested in one laptop from ASUS with a GTX 1660 Ti graphics card, which can now be purchased for $849.00. That’s $250 lower than the original MSRP, and cheaper than most other gaming laptops with the same graphics card.

The full specifications of this laptop include a 4-core/8-thread Ryzen 7 R7-3750H processor, an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti graphics card, 8GB of 2400MHz DDR4 RAM, a 256GB NVMe SSD, dual-band Wi-Fi, and an RGB-backlit keyboard. The screen is a 15.6-inch 1920×1080 “IPS-Level” display, though the refresh rate seems to only be 60Hz.

The graphics card appears to be a full GTX 1660 Ti, not the lower-power ‘Max-Q’ variant used by many gaming laptops, as evidenced by the product page and Asus’ own specifications table. Since the display is only 1080p, the laptop’s graphics card should be able to handle just about every game you can throw at it, though the GTX 1660 Ti lacks support for the ray-tracing features that Nvidia’s RTX cards offer. You can read more about the graphics card in our review here.

What is the run time of toshiba battery?

toshiba batteries have two main ratings on them: Volts and Amperes. Because size and weight of batteries is limited when compared to larger batteries such as car batteries, most companies show their ratings with Volts and Milliamperes. One thousand Milliamperes equals 1 Ampere. When buying a battery, select batteries with the most Milliamperes (or mAh). Batteries are also rated by Watt-Hours, perhaps the simplest rating of all. This is found by multiplying the Volts and the Amperes together. For example:

  • 14.4 Volts, 4000mAh (Note: 4000mAh is equal to 4.0 Amperes).
  • 14.4 x 4.0 = 57.60 Watt-Hours

Watt-Hours signifies the energy needed to power one watt for one hour.
