Apple on Wednesday released iOS 13.6, iPadOS 13.6, macOS 10.15.6, tvOS 13.4.8, and watchOS 6.2.8 to the public with new features such as Apple News+ audio content and CarKey support.
The iOS and iPadOS 13.6 software updates introduce a new Apple News audio component for Apple News+ subscribers, featuring professionally narrated stories curated by the company. There’s also a new local news initiative launching in five cities.
Additionally, Apple CarKey support is now active in iOS 13.6 and watchOS 6.2.8, meaning that users can store digital car keys in the Wallet app on their iPhone and iPads. The CarKey feature will initially only be compatible with certain BMW models, but will likely be expanded to include other carmakers in iOS 14 and beyond.
iOS 13.6 also adds a new “Symptoms” menu to the Health app, and implements a slew of bug fixes and under-the-hood improvements. One notable miscellaneous addition is a new toggle that will give users more granular control over iOS and iPadOS software updates.
tvOS 13.4.8 and macOS 10.15.6 appear to be bug-fixing updates with no major user-facing features. Besides CarKey support, watchOS 6.2.8 is similarly minor with only an expansion of irregular heart rhythm notifications and ECG app availability detailed in Apple’s release notes.
Apple also released HomePod firmware update 13.4.8 on Wednesday, which the company says includes “general improvements for stability and quality.”
Users should now be able to download the software updates over-the-air on iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple TVs and Apple Watches.
This is likely to be among the last rounds of updates to the current iOS 13, macOS Catalina, tvOS 13 and watchOS 6 cycle as Apple transitions its focus to iOS 14, macOS Big Sur, watchOS 7 and tvOS 14.
A recent patch to the Linux kernel (via Phoronix) points to an interesting problem with Intel’s nearly-mythical 10nm+ Ice Lake Xeon processors: The CPUs take longer than expected to return to normal frequencies after exiting certain sleep states, which then impacts performance consistency due to ‘uncertain’ CPU clock rates.
The severity of the issue isn’t clear, but If nothing else, it does show Intel’s that work on the Ice Lake Xeon processors continues, albeit with some challenges. Due to a report that Intel has been hit by another delay to its server programs, we reached out to the company last week to confirm if the schedule still remains on track. The company responded “We remain on track to deliver 10nm Ice Lake to customers in 2H20.”
We’ll see. Back to the issue at hand. Processors fall into various C-States (sleep) to reduce overall power consumption during idle periods. C-States have different degrees of power savings for each core, with the deepest levels of sleep involving stopping core clocks, flushing caches, and reducing voltage to extract the utmost in power savings. Additionally, Package C-States can apply that reduce power and clocks for resources on the CPU package that are shared by all the cores, like fabrics and the uncore.
The deeper the sleep state, the more power each processor can save. However, resuming to full speed from deeper sleep states requires more time than lighter sleep states. According to the report, that process seems to take longer with certain power states for the Ice Lake Xeon processors.
An Intel ‘kernel test robot’ posted the patch and explained the issue. As Phoronix points out, the fix comes from an Intel employee, meaning the company likely encountered the issue in its own testing. The explanation of the issue reads as follows:
“On ICX platform, the CPU frequency will slowly ramp up when woken up from C-states deeper than/equals to C1E. Although this feature does save energy in many cases this might also cause unexpected result. For example, workload might get unstable performance due to the uncertainty of CPU frequency. Besides, the CPU frequency might not be locked to specific level when the CPU utilization is low.
“Thus this patch disables C1E auto-promotion and expose C1E as a separate idle state, so that the C1E and C6 can be disabled via sysfs when necessary.”
To fix the problem, the system can disable the C1E and C6 states entirely, thus preventing the chip from entering into the lower sleep states. The engineer elaborates on the problem further:
“Besides C1 and C1E, the exit latency of C6 was measured by a dedicated tool. However the exit latency (41us) exposed by _CST is much smaller than the one we measured (128us). This is probably due to the _CST uses the exit latency when woken up from PC0+C6, rather than PC6+C6 when C6 was measured. Choose the latter as we need the longest latency in theory.”
Here we see that the problem stems from how the exit latency (the amount of time it takes the CPU to pop back to full speed) is measured, and then exposed to the kernel. ACPI_CST, which communicates the C-States information to the kernel, lists the latency as measured when the processor was in a PC0+C6 state. That means that one or more cores may be in a C6 sleep state, but the rest of the package (fabric and uncore) is still chugging along at full speed (PC0). In this state, it takes the core only 41us to resume normal operation.
However, when the processor enters the PC6+C6 state, the package also powers down (PC6 state) along with the cores, so it takes longer for the processor to regain its full speed. Intel measured the sleep exit latency in these conditions at 128us, so it appears the kernel is merely being given the wrong sleep exit values.
Just to get an idea of how this differs from other Intel processors, we searched around for the typical sleep exit latency for a Skylake-based processor.
We referred back to an interesting bachelor’s thesis [PDF] by Vladislav Govtva from the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences that was published early last year. He measured the sleep exit latency from several different generations of Intel processors, and above we can see his results with an Intel Xeon Platinum 8170M (Skylake).
Govtva measured the maximum wake latency (the same as exit latency) from a C6 state as ~108us, which is 20us faster than the Ice Lake processor. There are likely differing measurement criteria involved here, but a simple comparison of the number yields an 18.5% increase in sleep exit latency.
It appears Intel has “fixed” the problem by allowing the system to disable certain sleep states under certain conditions, but it’s possible this is just a corner case that won’t apply to many types of applications. We’re reaching out to Intel for further clarification, but given that Ice Lake hasn’t been officially released, we don’t expect to learn much.
It will be interesting to see if Intel continues to tune this parameter further as it works through teething pains. Phoronix posits that the patch could make it into the Linux 5.9 cycle that opens next month, but could result in higher power consumption in exchange for more performance.

A few days ago studying in the UH library, I noticed my laptop all of a sudden wasn’t receiving power and the light my AC adapter was blinking. After unplugging it from the laptop, that is, from the power jack, the AC adapter’s light turned solid green again. Then, as you might guess, after plugging it back into the laptop’s power jack, the light on the adapter would again start blinking and no power would circulate.
After brief research, I learned that I could take the battery out and press the power button to relieve all currents and that after that everything would work fine. Well, I did get it to work, however not my this method. After trying it several times and failing, I figured I’d just use the laptop without the battery, since it powered the laptop without the battery in it. Then the idea of just placing the battery back in the laptop while I was receiving power came up. So as the laptop is working I placed the battery in and SUCCESS the AC adapter no longer was blinking and it was successfully transferring power to the laptop and battery.
Now, however, several days later, in a similar library, I noticed I wasn’t receiving power again. When I unplugged the adapter from the laptop, the light on the adapter continued to blink. This was not the case previously. Previously, the light on the adapter would only blink when plugged into the laptop and would turn solid green when I disconnected it from the laptop. Now however, without the laptop ever coming into the picture, the AC adapter, by itself, not plugged into anything other than the wall, constantly blinks. The laptop receives no power, and I’m stuck.
Also, used my sisters AC adapter, she has a similar laptop, and everything worked fine. Meanwhile, my AC adapter, while plugged into the same power jack in the wall, just blinks.. and blinks…

OnePlus has shown off the design of its upcoming midrange smartphone, the OnePlus Nord. YouTuber Marques Brownlee interviewed OnePlus’ Global Director Carl Pei and showed off a few glimpses of the upcoming device.
Like the rumors indicated, the front of the device features two selfie cameras in an oval-shaped cutout. The phone’s appearance is reminiscent of a Samsung Galaxy S10+ but with the hole punch on the opposite side of the display. The back camera block follows the same design language as earlier OnePlus phones by putting everything in a vertical strip, but on the Nord, the camera assembly is in the corner of the phone instead of centered in the middle like previous devices.
We now know most of the big points of the OnePlus Nord, thanks to OnePlus’ constant, iterative leaking. Previously, the company said the phone would be under $500, feature a Snapdragon 765G SoC, and come with a “flagship camera.” Rumors previously pointed toward a 90Hz display, and today’s conversation hinted at that, with Pei saying, “When it comes to displays, [the cost is] a lot about volume, so now that 90Hz displays have become really common, that drives the volume up and the price down.” Pei went onto say, “We spent a lot on this display to ensure smooth scrolling, but we think it’s worth it.”
The phone is shaping up to be a pretty great-looking offering, but it won’t launch in the United States at first. The official explanation is from OnePlus CEO Pete Lau is that “we are going to start relatively small with this new product line by first introducing it in Europe and India. But don’t worry, we’re also looking to bring more affordable smartphones to North America in the near future as well.”
The phone’s unveiling, to the extent there’s anything left to unveil, is July 21.
One of the features that Canon mentioned in passing when it revealed the EOS R5 and R6 was the addition of Animal Eye AF. Combined with the new and improved Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, the feature should work pretty well, but now we have our first real-world tests that actually show it in action.

The EOS R5 press release from Canon offered the following footnote about the feature:
[i] Effectiveness varies depending on the subject. In some cases, dogs, cats or birds may not be detected, while some animals other than dogs, cats or birds may be detected
As you can see in the videos below, this plays out pretty accurately in real world use. Animal AF works pretty well on most subjects—though it does lose track in some cases—and seems to work far beyond the “dogs, cats, and even birds,” that Canon emphasized in the original announcement.

Some photographers question the usefulness of Animal Eye AF or Animal Detection AF—also found in some Sony, Nikon, and Panasonic cameras—seeing it as something of a gimmick that is only really useful for a select niche of photographers. But for that niche, the option to lock on to an animal’s eye automatically can only be a positive.

While the Galaxy Note 20 is garnering most of the attention toward Samsung right now, the Galaxy Fold 2 remains a highly-anticipated device that we know comparatively little about.
Although reports over the last week have indicated that the Fold 2 won’t show at Samsung’s August 5 Unpacked event, a slate of specs have just leaked, courtesy of Korea’s ETNews (by way of PhoneArena) that provides a clearer picture of how the Fold 2 might end up.
Galaxy Fold 2 displays
First off, it seems as though both the Galaxy Fold’s internal and external displays will grow in size. The external one will see the biggest difference, going from a measly 4.3 inches in the original model to 6.23 inches in the upcoming one, while the main screen will reportedly go from 7.3 to 7.7 inches, perhaps thanks to the removal of the first-generation Fold’s large camera notch.
Expect the next Fold’s display to see an upgrade in technology as well as size. ETNews reports Ultra Thin Glass, which first debuted on the Galaxy Z Flip, will make it to the Galaxy Fold 2, as well as a 120Hz maximum refresh rate, like what’s in the Galaxy S20 series and soon, the Galaxy Note 20 as well. It’s unknown if the new Note’s long-rumored LTPO technology, which allows for a fully dynamic refresh rate and thus more efficient power draw, will be included on the Fold 2.

In terms of power and memory, Samsung could opt for the Snapdragon 865 Plus — a new chipset recently revealed by Qualcomm, that offer slightly better performance than the ordinary 865 in most flagship Android products. That’ll reportedly be paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of non-expandable storage; a 512GB option may also be offered.
The Fold 2 will reportedly carry separate batteries for each side, combining for a total capacity of 4,365mAh. This is a bit of surprise, considering that the original Galaxy Fold has a 4,380 mAh battery.

ETNews reports that Samsung will skip the 108-megapixel primary sensor for the upcoming Fold, opting instead for a more conventional 12-MP main lens, another 12-MP camera for ultrawide shots, and a 64-MP telephoto that would likely employ cropping for zoom. This is exactly the same stack you’ll find on the base Galaxy S20. There will also be 10-MP front-facing cameras at the tops of both displays, so you’ll be able to take selfies whether the phone is folded up or not.
Not the only Samsung foldables coming
While the Galaxy Fold 2 looks enticing from these leaked specs, it’s worth pointing out that it’s far from the only foldable Samsung will offer. There’s also the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, which we do expect to see at the Unpacked event in a few weeks’ time, as well as a cheaper version of the Fold 2, tentatively called the Galaxy Fold Lite, that we know the least about. This model could replace the Fold 2’s external display with a strip for notifications, and pack fewer cameras as well.
Add it all up and, well, that’s a lot of folding Samsung phones, and a busy second half of the year for Galaxy-branded devices. We look forward to getting a peek at some of them at Samsung’s unveiling on August 5.
