Galaxy Book Flex review: A pretty QLED laptop with a useful S Pen Samsung’s laptops are coming into their own.

Samsung has had a troubled past as a laptop maker. Its ATIV, Notebook and Odyssey machines were underwhelming, and in the late 2010s the company consolidated its efforts into the Galaxy Book line. Instead of competing against the usual PC makers like Dell, HP, Lenovo and ASUS, Samsung focused on making more mobile-friendly machines. It prioritized thin-and-light designs and great displays, and it added an onboard stylus, borrowing the features that made its smartphones the industry favorites they are today.

With the Galaxy Book Flex, Samsung continues to show improved self-awareness by showcasing its superior display tech. The Flex is the first laptop with a QLED panel, which promises more colors, deeper blacks and greater brightness. It also comes standard with an S Pen and a wireless-charging pad built into the trackpad. Two models — 13 inch and 15 inch — are available, and we received the smaller version, which costs $1,349. The larger is just $50 more, and both are available today.

Summary

The Galaxy Book Flex is a gorgeous, powerful laptop with a vibrant QLED display. Though its battery life isn’t as long as some of the competition, the Flex is still a capable machine with a helpful S Pen onboard.

Design

I gotta give Samsung props. The company has seriously stepped up the design of its laptops over the past few years. The Galaxy Book S and Galaxy Chromebook both had super sleek builds, and the Flex is no different. This thing is all clean lines and sharp corners, with gleaming edges that give it a polished look. The deep royal blue of my review unit is refreshing: I’m used to boring silver, black or gray laptops, so my eyes welcome this change.

Though it’s impressively thin, the Flex feels solid and dense. It’s still pretty light though at just 1.15kg (2.53 pounds). In comparison, the new MacBook Air and the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 are both heavier at 2.8 and 2.9 pounds, respectively.

The Flex’s 13.3-inch screen is surrounded by minimal bezels on the top, left and right sides, with a fatter chin at the bottom. That thicker bottom bezel is still common in laptops, though Dell managed to do away with it in this year’s XPS 13 — maybe the rest of the industry will catch up soon. Samsung still managed to squeeze a webcam above the Flex’s screen, although it sadly doesn’t support Windows Hello logins.

Along the edges, you’ll find a headphone jack, a microSD card reader, a push-to-release S Pen slot and three USB-C ports (two of which are Thunderbolt 3 compatible). That’s one more USB-C socket than the XPS and MacBook have, with the Apple laptop lacking the card slot the other two offer. As a consequence of offering more connectivity options, the Flex is also slightly thicker than both of those laptops. Still, it’s compact enough to fit in most of my work bags.

Display

I’ll be honest: I can’t tell the difference between an OLED and QLED screen of the same size and resolution. And you might not be able to either. That is to say, you won’t have any complaints about the Flex’s full HD display in terms of color reproduction and vibrance. I watched several episodes of Amazon’s new show Upload. The rich, autumnal colors in the leafy forest settings were stunning, and it was easy to make out details in even dimly lit scenes.

My apartment gets a lot of light, so it can sometimes get hard to see any laptop’s screen. The Flex’s Outdoor Mode is supposed to combat that by bumping the brightness an extra 200 nits to 600 nits. But switching it on via the keyboard shortcut only helped a little bit. However, it was much more useful on a slightly gloomy day.

I wish Samsung hadn’t made this a mode that you switch on or off and instead offered it as a few extra levels on the built-in brightness scale. Sometimes I needed a little bit more than the built-in max, but in those situations I had to use Outdoor Mode, which scorched my retinas. Still, it probably conserves battery to only bump up brightness by that much for short periods of time rather than encourage you to use it for an extended stretch.

Outdoor Mode also added a weird yellow cast to the screen, as if it turned on a blue-light filter. This wasn’t a big deal other than when I needed to edit photos for color temperatures. In those cases, you’ll have to turn off Outdoor Mode and figure out some other way to see your display without that brightness boost.

Keyboard and trackpad

Because it’s so slim, I was expecting the Book Flex to have shallow keys, but Samsung was able to offer a surprisingly deep amount of travel here. The keyboard is well laid out, with no undersized buttons save for the right-shift key, which is a little less wide to make room for the fingerprint sensor next to it.

My one gripe would be that the left-shift key seemed a little sticky, and too often I would try to uppercase the first letter of a word and end up getting the first two letters instead. I’d blame it on my lazy pinkie, but I haven’t encountered this on any other laptop.

A quick note on the fingerprint scanner: It was fast and accurate, usually unlocking the laptop without delay. Since it’s Windows Hello-compatible, I also used it for authentication on programs like Google Chrome. While the placement is uncommon — most laptops place their fingerprint readers on the top right of the deck or embed it into the power button — Samsung’s choice didn’t feel too odd.

Below the spacebar sits the Flex’s trackpad, which is fairly roomy given the laptop’s small footprint. Smaller notebooks often have cramped trackpads, but the surface area here is generous. It’s not as tall as the XPS 13’s or MacBook Air’s, but it offers enough vertical space. Aside from being large, the Flex’s touchpad is also responsive and smooth, and gestures like scrolling or pinch-to-zoom worked well.

S Pen

One of my favorite things about Samsung laptops is the S Pen. It’s not only fun for drawing self-portraits or scribbling down notes but also helpful for signing urgent PDFs. I just had to open the document, select “Add a Note” from the toolbar and sign on the dotted line.

The Flex offers the same onboard stylus as the Note 10 — don’t expect the bigger, more pen-like version on the Galaxy Tab S series. Still, it’s comfortable enough to use for hours while drawing a self-portrait. Fans of Samsung’s Air Command menu on its Note phones will be pleased to know it pops up here too when you slide the S Pen out of its slot.

Performance and in use

The Flex may look like a dainty machine, but it actually packs a powerful 10th-generation Intel Core i7 processor. My review unit came with 16GB of RAM, which is double the 8GB configuration you can buy in the US. (The 15-inch model has the same CPU but 12GB of RAM.) Bear in mind that this means my experience, at least when it comes to performance and speed, isn’t going to be representative of what you can expect.

With these guts, the Flex deftly dealt with my daily workflow of Slack, dozens of Chrome tabs, spreadsheets and the inescapable Zoom calls that permeate our lives now. The laptop also kept up with my new at-home needs, like executing my podcast-recording setup and uploading large files for review videos. I also played several rounds of League of Legends after rediscovering it, and the Flex never let me down.

That is, until I decided to turn on Samsung’s Silent mode. This is meant to keep the laptop’s fans quiet if you’re bothered by them. It’s pretty easy to activate: Just slide a switch in the Samsung Settings app. You don’t have to go into Boot mode to access it. I never found the Flex too loud, but I guess those trying to get work done in bed next to a light sleeper or just really hate white noise might.

I did notice a significant decrease in sound when I enabled Silent Mode, though it seemed to throttle CPU performance. When I tried to continue playing League afterward, the system lag made it nearly impossible: My character could barely make it to the first turret before I gave up and restarted (with Silent Mode off). This is somewhat understandable. You can’t expect high-speed performance when the fans are turned off without the computer running too hot. Silent Mode is more useful if you’re bothered by the noise and aren’t running anything intensive.

Battery life and wireless PowerShare

Thanks to the Flex’s QLED screen and 69.7Whr battery, Samsung promises up to 20 hours of runtime. In reality though, that number is a lot lower. Our video-looping battery test drained the Flex in about 13 and a half hours, which is better than the MacBook Air but falls short of the XPS 13 2-in-1’s 14-and-a-half hour mark. In real-world experience though, I saw power levels plunge below 20 percent after five hours of heavy use. To be fair, that involved energy-sapping processes like video playback and more-frenzied League games.

One of the new features of the Flex is its trackpad’s built-in wireless charger that can deliver power to Qi-compatible devices. It’s the same Wireless PowerShare feature that debuted on the Galaxy S10. You can’t use the trackpad while you’re charging something, which makes sense, since something is literally obstructing the usable area. I’m not sure how helpful this feature is, since wireless charging is typically too slow to be meaningful. I placed the Galaxy S20 Ultra on the trackpad (after the requisite first step of turning on the feature in Settings) and watched as its battery level climbed painfully slowly from 79 percent to 85 percent in 20 minutes.

For something smaller, like the Galaxy Buds, I could see this being useful in a pinch (say, in an airplane when you’re running low on juice). Otherwise, wireless PowerShare isn’t something I’ll use a lot.

Wrap-up

I’m enamored with the Galaxy Book Flex. It’s a pretty machine with a nice display, powerful guts and useful S Pen. But I wish there were more configurations (for each size) to make the base price lower. Sure, $1,349 for a Core i7 processor and 8GB of RAM isn’t the priciest, considering the new MacBook Air tops out at $1,199 for a Core i5 and the similarly specced XPS 13 2-in-1 costs a lot more at $1,700. But with the competition offering options starting at $999, that’s tough to swallow.

Still, if you’re looking for a gorgeous, beefy laptop with a good screen and don’t need it to last forever, the Galaxy Book Flex is worth considering. More important, it proves it’s time to take Samsung’s laptops seriously again.

Canon EOS R6 Announcement Delayed Until July: Report

Canon’s much-rumored and anticipated EOS R6—the mirrorless variant of the 6D line-up of DSLRs—was originally expected in May, but it sounds like we’ll have to wait a little while longer for this full-frame mirrorless camera to officially arrive.

According to Canon Rumors multiple sources are saying that Canon has been forced to delay the announcement of the EOS R6 until July, pushing shipping for the camera until Q3 of 2020. Assuming this remains the case, the camera should still arrive in plenty of time for the 2020 Holiday season, but it’s disappointing news for Canon mirrorless fans all the same.

It seems the rumored EOS R6 will, more or less, come to replace the current EOS R. And while it is expected to use a lower resolution image sensor, in many ways, it will be the camera the EOS R should have been. Here are the anticipated specs, which were originally leaked in March:

20MP full-frame sensor

IBIS

12fps max with the mechanical shutter

20fps max with the electronic shutter

4K/60p and 1080/120p video capability

Dual card slots

Compared to the EOS R5, sources say the R6 will use a lower-resolution EVF, lack the top-down screen, and represent a drop in overall build quality. These trade-offs will hopefully also mean a very attainable price tag.

For stills shooters who want buy into the RF ecosystem but aren’t happy with what the EOS R and EOS RP have to offer—and aren’t interested in the eye-watering video specs Canon is building into the EOS R5—it sounds like we’ll be waiting a bit longer for another option to hit the market. Then again, we all kind of expected that, didn’t we?

What is the run time of asus battery?

asus batteries have two main ratings on them: Volts and Amperes. Because size and weight of batteries is limited when compared to larger batteries such as car batteries, most companies show their ratings with Volts and Milliamperes. One thousand Milliamperes equals 1 Ampere. When buying a battery, select batteries with the most Milliamperes (or mAh). Batteries are also rated by Watt-Hours, perhaps the simplest rating of all. This is found by multiplying the Volts and the Amperes together. For example:

  • 14.4 Volts, 4000mAh (Note: 4000mAh is equal to 4.0 Amperes).
  • 14.4 x 4.0 = 57.60 Watt-Hours

Watt-Hours signifies the energy needed to power one watt for one hour.

Simplo batteries have two main ratings on them: Volts and Amperes.

Windows 10’s missing data new profile bug is still there

Some users who have installed recent Windows 10 updates including KB4549951 have reported that their user profile with all the data, customizations and documents weren’t loading when they logged in. After the updates are applied, Windows 10 boots with a mysterious temporary user profile bug and it could move your data or even delete them.

We’ve been reporting about this bug for months and it appears that the issue is still there, and it could affect anyone. It’s not clear why or how Windows 10 loads with an entirely new user profile.

A number of users also reported that their data including documents or pictures disappeared after they installed Windows 10 KB4549951, which was released on April 14.

After the update is applied, Windows renames normal user profile folder, then creates and loads a temporary user profile when the PC boots up.

The original profile is renamed when Windows 10 update is installed and data including system customizations magically disappear, but the good news is, the bug does not permanently delete profile or data for most of the users.

The original profile should still be in C: > Users, but your data would be in a file ending with “.ooo” or “.bak”.

Fortunately, there are ways to get it back. If you restart Windows for at least 6 to 8 times, the user profile and the data should return.

It’s not clear how many restarts are needed, nor whether it works for everyone. For example, some users reported that their files completely disappeared and they’re unable to find or restore it.

Some users also reported the problem after updating to Windows 10 version 1909 from 1903

According to multiple Microsoft support staff, you can also resolve the problem by setting up a new account and then manually transferring the data from the temporary account over to it.

The more consistent option is to just backup the files stored in the system drive before installing the updates. You should always maintain the backup of the data which are on the same partition as your operating system.

OnePlus 8 review: Thinner, lighter, and prettier than the Pro

After announcing the OnePlus 8 family a couple of weeks ago, the company released the two handsets this week. While we reviewed the OnePlus 8 Pro flagship last week, it’s now time to turn our attention to its non-Pro sibling, the OnePlus 8.

While the Pro is only available unlocked from OnePlus and Amazon, the OnePlus 8 is the one that you’ll actually be able to get from carriers, including T-Mobile and Verizon. And since the OnePlus 8 5G UW is sold on Verizon, that makes it the only model that supports both sub6 and mmWave 5G.

Starting at $699, this is definitely the more mainstream version of the OnePlus 8 series, missing out on things like wireless charging and a 120Hz refresh rate on the display. It’s still pretty awesome though, with a 90Hz OLED screen, and a particularly sexy Interstellar Glow color.

Compare Deals

Pricing is $699 for the model with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, or $799 for 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. The Verizon variant is a bit more expensive at $799 for the 128GB model, but that’s also for better 5G support.

Design

As far as design goes, the OnePlus 8 is superior to the Pro, at least in my opinion. Right out of the gate, let’s start with the color. The OnePlus 8 comes in a color called Interstellar Pro, and it’s gorgeous. As I remarked in my review of the Pro, I can’t believe they reserved it for the non-Pro. Interstellar Glow is the clear winner of the color selection.

Note that if you love the Glacial Green that the Pro does come in, you can get that too. Interstellar Glow is a mirrored color that has a rainbow-colored gradient, which changes based on how the light is reflected off of it. Even the reflections look beautiful.

Yes, it is a fingerprint magnet, and no, the matte Glacial Green is not. That’s a matter of preference, whether you want the prettier one or if you want the one that’s easier to maintain. You might end up using a case too, such as the new Glacial Green Sandstone case that OnePlus is offering.

It’s not just the color that makes me like the design better though. The camera bump is much smaller. If you’re not using a case on the Pro, it sticks out like a sore thumb. On the OnePlus 8, the camera bump is a little bit more subtle. Also, the handset as a whole has a slightly smaller footprint, making it easier to hold.

It’s also thinner and 19g lighter. Actual usability is something that I feel like we don’t talk about as much as we should. Sometimes we look for power, camera performance, sexy displays, and battery life without taking a look at what that does to the overall form factor. It’s worth talking about now because with the OnePlus 8, it might actually be a proper balance.

On the bottom of the aluminum frame, there’s a USB Type-C port for charging, a speaker grille, and a dual nano-SIM slot. The unit that I have is unlocked, so I can’t confirm that the carrier models are dual-SIM, although they’re almost certainly not.

On the right side of the device, there’s a power button and a switch to turn notification sounds on or off. There are three settings: on, vibrate, and silent. It’s a nice and easy way to adjust this, something that OnePlus has been doing for years now. Outside of the Android world, I’ve only ever seen this feature from Apple, and I wish more OEMs did it.

Finally, the volume rocker is on the left side of the device. Not much to talk about there.

90Hz Fluid AMOLED display

OnePlus used a 6.55-inch 90Hz FHD OLED display, as opposed to the 6.78-inch 120Hz QHD OLED screen that’s found in the Pro. There’s some good and some bad here.

The good is that I don’t think that there’s a noticeable difference between 90Hz and 120Hz, or between FHD and QHD. For years, we’ve been used to 60Hz screens, and the smooth animations on higher refresh rates make for a pleasant experience, but I really think 90Hz is fine. OnePlus is actually the first to popularize the feature too with last year’s OnePlus 7 Pro. And like I said, I don’t think anyone can really tell the difference between FHD and QHD on a screen this small.

OnePlus brought the 90Hz refresh rate to the non-Pro lineup with the 7T, but that screen was flat. Now, the edges are curved, so if you’re a fan of flat screens, as many people seem to be these days, you’re out of luck.

The screen is beautiful, just like the one on the Pro. It has vibrant colors, true blacks, and smooth animations. The bad is just that it seems to be a bit buggy. If you turn on Night Mode, there are some real scrolling issues. Text is impossible to read, icons look distorted when scrolling through the app drawer, and more. This even happens when scrolling slowly.

It really takes away from the smooth scrolling and animations that I expect from a 90Hz display, and from what actually does happen when Night Mode is off.

There’s also no always-on display, which is a real shame. If you raise the phone, you’ll see a UI like the one above, which means that you don’t have to press the power button to use the in-display fingerprint sensor. OnePlus is adding an AoD though; it just hasn’t said when.

I want to reiterate that it has an in-display fingerprint sensor, one of the fastest and most accurate on the market. This is important because premium smartphones from Apple and Google only have facial recognition, which is unusable these days if you have to wear a mask all the time.

Zen Mode

Like the switch to control notification sounds, Zen Mode is another unique feature that OnePlus offers. It debuted with last year’s OnePlus 7 Pro, and what it does is it simply keeps you from using your phone. Last year, you could set it to work for 20 minutes, but you can now set it to 20, 30, 40, or 60 minutes.

All you can do while in Zen Mode is make emergency calls, receive calls, and access the camera. Notifications are muted, but you’ll still get them if you’re wearing a smartwatch, oddly enough.

Once you’re in Zen Mode, there’s no way out besides riding out the clock. Even if you restart the phone, that won’t help.

Camera

The OnePlus 8 has a triple-lens camera system, but it’s inferior to the OnePlus 8 Pro. The main sensor is a 48MP Sony IMX586, and while it has the same f/1.75 aperture, the sensor is smaller. That means that low-light performance isn’t quite on par with the Pro. There’s also no telephoto lens, including a 2MP macro lens instead. And finally, there’s a 16MP ultra-wide sensor.

The main sensor does support 4K video capture at 60fps, but there’s no 8K video recording like we’ve seen on various Snapdragon 865 devices so far this year. It’s likely because OnePlus wanted to use quad pixel binning for better low light performance. The front camera is still limited to 1080p at 30fps.

The camera does promise 2x lossless zoom, even though there’s no 2x zoom lens. That’s just generally what you get from such a high-resolution sensor.

There’s actually a lot that I like about this camera, considering the specs and what it’s lacking when compared to the Pro. Low-light performance is OK, but Nightscape mode gets the job done. As was also my complaint with the OnePlus 8 Pro, low-light performance with the ultra-wide camera is terrible, and you can’t compensate for it with Nightscape because the feature only works with the main sensor.

OnePlus also likes to release software updates to improve the product over time. We’ve already seen numerous camera improvements via updates, such as better focusing in low-light conditions.

Performance and battery life

As always, performance is solid. The OnePlus 8 includes the best Android chipset on the market, the Snapdragon 865, along with up to 12GB RAM and up to 256GB UFS 3.0 storage. OnePlus had actually sent me the 8GB RAM OnePlus 8 Pro, but the 12GB RAM OnePlus 8, so this thing felt blazingly fast at all times.

It also includes a Snapdragon X55 modem for 5G connectivity, although most models only support sub6 5G. To be completely honest, you won’t notice a massive difference between this and 4G right now, but it should get better over time. T-Mobile is the biggest name in this arena right now, since it actually has a nationwide sub6 network.

Verizon is more focused on mmWave, although it does have sub6 coming later on this year. The problem with millimeter wave 5G is that it only works in line of sight with a base station. You’ll only ever get it outdoors, and it won’t even work while it’s in your pocket. Real 5G is going to be a combination of sub6 and mmWave, and the only variant of the OnePlus 8 that actually supports that is the Verizon model.

Battery life is pretty good, getting through the day without issue under moderate usage. Obviously, it goes down if you use it a lot, and what I mean if that if you play games on your phone for a couple of hours on end, you’ll have to charge it before the end of the day.

Warp Charge 30T is awesome. A half-hour charge will keep you going for a while. The real shame is that there’s no wireless charging. Even if it didn’t have the magnificent 30W wireless charging that’s available on the Pro, I’d take 10W Qi charging just to keep it on the wireless charging pad on my desk all day.

For benchmarks, I used Geekbench 5, AnTuTu, and GFXBench. First up is Geekbench 5, which tests the CPU.

This isn’t the first Snapdragon 865 device of the year, so I won’t dwell on these scores that are nearly identical as the ones I got on the OnePlus 8 Pro, Galaxy S20+ 5G, LG V60 ThinQ 5G, and more. Next up is AnTuTu, which tests everything.

The overall score is similar to the 576,696 one I got on the OnePlus 8 Pro, but the Pro did a lot better in the UX (particularly User Experience) section, and it was made up for in the memory section. I wonder if the 12GB RAM Pro would have had a better score here. Anyway, next up is GFXBench, which tests the CPU.

Conclusion

I believe that the OnePlus 8 series includes two phones that are the best on the market right now. Apple’s iPhones and Google’s Pixels are non-starters without a fingerprint sensor, and I really couldn’t stand Samsung’s software or camera on the Galaxy S20+. Motorola’s Edge+ is a great all-around package, but it’s a Verizon exclusive.

If you ask me, the real decision is between the OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 8 Pro. The Pro costs $200 more for similar specs. It’s $699 and $799 for 8GB/128GB and 12GB/256GB on the OnePlus 8, respectively, and $899 and $999 for the OnePlus 8 Pro. What you get for that extra $200 is 30W wireless charging (10W if it’s not OnePlus’s own charger), a better camera with a telephoto lens, and a 120Hz display.

Whether those extra specs are worth it is up to you, but I really like the OnePlus 8. In fact, I almost like it more regardless of the price. It’s thinner, lighter, and it has a smaller footprint. It’s prettier with its Interstellar Glow color, and it has a smaller camera bump.

Microsoft Issues Windows 10 Update Warning

Microsoft has recently hinted at big changes coming to Windows 10 updates, but that doesn’t help the here and now – especially after a rotten run of bad updates recently. And now Microsoft has warned you must be alert again.

Picked up by Windows Latest, Microsoft has confirmed that its “new final build” of the big Windows 10 May 2020 Update is ready but it will ship with several known issues.

The company warns that after the update, Windows 10 users will find Windows Mixed Reality, its platform for virtual and augmented reality applications with more than 2,500 games and VR experiences, “may not work correctly for many users”. In addition, its DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) tool has problems whereby it may not report the correct status when repairing corruption on systems, and there are issues with text entry in some niche cases.

The good news is Microsoft is working on fixes and, unsurprisingly, it is making fixes for Windows Mixed Reality a priority “which we hope to release in early May.” Despite this, Microsoft will continue the rollout of the Windows 10 May 2020 Update and anyone who checks for updates (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update) will receive it.

What does the May 2020 update bring? It’s mostly tweaks and fixes (aside from the things Microsoft knows it breaks) along with upgrades to the Windows Subsystem for Linux and graphical improvements to the Settings and Task Manager user interfaces. So yes, it isn’t essential and I would advise mainstream users stay away from it right now.

Microsoft does have (overdue) plans to improve Windows 10 updates, but with the platform recently passing one billion installations, the vast majority of users would be wise to remain cautious.
