What is the run time of DELL battery?

DELL batteries have two main ratings on them: Volts and Amperes. Because size and weight of batteries is limited when compared to larger batteries such as car batteries, most companies show their ratings with Volts and Milliamperes. One thousand Milliamperes equals 1 Ampere. When buying a battery, select batteries with the most Milliamperes (or mAh). Batteries are also rated by Watt-Hours, perhaps the simplest rating of all. This is found by multiplying the Volts and the Amperes together. For example:

  • 14.4 Volts, 4000mAh (Note: 4000mAh is equal to 4.0 Amperes).
  • 14.4 x 4.0 = 57.60 Watt-Hours

Watt-Hours signifies the energy needed to power one watt for one hour.

You Can Now Clean Install Windows 10 20H1 as Microsoft Releases ISO Files for Build 19013

New Windows 10 20H1 ISO files have been released. These latest ISO files are available for Build 19013 that was released to Insiders in the Fast ring last week. This particular build brought new kaomoji, newer version of PowerToys and some WSL 2 improvements.

Microsoft last released ISO files about a month ago for build 18990. But you can now clean install a latest build of the next major Windows 10 version. As reported earlier, Microsoft has internally almost finalized Windows 10 20H1 potentially planning to deliver the RTM build to Insiders at the end of this year to align the release with Azure. This is probably why we aren’t seeing any new features being tested with Windows 10 20H1 anymore.

You can now download official Windows 10 ISO files for build 19013 from the Windows Insider website

To be able to download the ISO files, you will first need to follow these steps to get yourself enrolled in the Windows Insider Program. [Windows Insiders can directly download the Windows 10 20H1 ISO files]

AOC Q27T1 Monitor Designed by Studio F.A. Porsche Looks the Part

Amsterdam-based AOC has been collaborating with Studio F. A. Porsche (created by a grandson of the sports car maker’s founder) and came up with the Q27T1, a slim and sleek 27-inch QHD monitor.

The Q27T1 sports an IPS panel with a 75 Hz refresh rate and 5ms response time. That means it won’t be one of the best gaming monitors, but should be suitable for less competitive gamers, especially with the FreeSync support, for fighting screen tears at refresh rates of 48 Hz and higher.

The display’s max brightness is 350 nits, and color gamut coverage is decent with 107% sRGB. Being just an 8-bit panel with 16.7 million colors, it’s not meant for creative pros.

The design consists of a black glossy panel with slim bezels, and it has an asymmetric metal stand. This stand doesn’t support any adjustments beyond the panel’s tilt, but it does look neat. The rear of the monitor comes in white and black with a large AOC logo, and the I/O has its own cover to keep things looking good from the rear. The I/O itself consists of DisplayPort 1.2, two HDMI 1.4 ports and line in and out jacks.

All things considered, it’s a pretty decent monitor that certainly looks the part. Just don’t expect the greatest gaming performance from it, nor the ability to use it for professional creative work.

AOC’s Q27T1 is available in the U.K for £269, which translates to about $350 USD. For these specs, there are more competitive options available, but it looks like AOC is charging a premium for that stylish design.

WhatsApp gives you more ways to avoid annoying group chats

WhatsApp is giving you more ways to block people from adding you to group chats. Its updated privacy settings replace the original “nobody” option with a “my contacts except” choice that lets you prevent certain people (or all of them, if you prefer) from dragging you into a group. Your close friends and family can add you to a chat, for example, but a co-worker can’t rope you into a sports discussion without your permission.

Like earlier, a chat administrator who doesn’t have permission can still send a private invitation through an individual chat. The request will disappear after three days, so you can ignore it if you’d rather not respond.

The feature should be active now on Android and iOS. This is an acknowledgment that unwanted group invitations are still an issue, of course, but it’s also part of an ongoing effort to fight fake news. There should be fewer opportunities for people to spread misinformation, at least to people who weren’t already receptive to it.

An upcoming Chromebook may support Ambient EQ

Taking a note from the recently released Pixel 4, it appears that a future Chromebook may include support for Ambient EQ. This capability would help relieve eye strain when working under various lighting conditions through the use of automatic white balance adjustments.

Multiple commits in Chromium Gerrit—a tool used for code review—point towards the functionality being added to Chrome OS. These commits include details for adding a flag to display/hide the Ambient EQ UI, testing if the current device supports Ambient EQ, and adding a UI control for Ambient EQ.

Ambient EQ is implemented in a fashion similar to that of auto-brightness. An ambient light color sensor collects information about your surroundings, then modifies the screen temperature to allow for better viewing.

This marks the first time such a feature would become available in Chromebooks. Currently, Chromebook hardware lacks the required color sensor a device would need in order to perform this function — we’d need to see the launch of a new model in order for this to become a reality.

Besides the Pixel 4, this functionality has also been used on the Google Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max. If these commits are to be believed, it looks like Chromebooks are next.

Razer’s latest wireless mice promise low-lag gaming from $60

Razer is expanding its Basilisk mouse family with a pair of models that aim to make low-latency wireless mice both more accessible and more powerful. The most interesting model may be the affordable option, the six-button Basilisk X HyperSpeed (above). It packs a 16,000DPI sensor, Bluetooth support and its namesake low-lag HyperSpeed wireless (when you use a 2.4GHz USB dongle) for a reasonable $60. You may save money on batteries, too, as one AA cell will deliver about 12 days of use on 2.4GHz, or 19 days on Bluetooth.

The Basilisk Ultimate (below), meanwhile, is the spare-no-expense option. It touts the same 20,000DPI sensor as the Viper Ultimate, 11 buttons and optical mouse switches to reduce both delays and the risk of corrosive effects. You also get up to five on-device memory profiles, optional wired use and the seemingly obligatory abundance of Chroma RGB lighting. It doesn’t last as long at 100 hours using the 4GHz dongle (no Bluetooth here), but that’s not shocking given the performance. You can buy the Ultimate for $150 by itself, or $170 with a Mouse Dock that simplifies recharging.

Both mice are available now, and you can buy the Mouse Dock separately for $50 if you need it later.

CHROME OS 78 FINALLY ADDED VIRTUAL DESKS, BUT YOU’LL NEED TO DO THIS TO FULLY LEVERAGE THEM

The trail that has led to Virtual Desks finally rolling out in Chrome OS 78 has been a long one. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad the team took the time to get this new feature fully-formed before actually introducing it to the world. Though we’ve been talking about Virtual Desks for nearly the entirety of 2019, Chrome OS 78 is the first Stable Channel update to include this feature right out of the box without any additional steps necessary.

Here’s the thing, though: the entire experience is STILL not complete. Yes, from the overview mode you can now add up to 4 virtual work spaces and, yes, you can use a click to get between them from that screen. The real usefulness of virtual work spaces, however, isn’t just in the availability of extra screen real estate in a virtual sense: it lies in the quickness with which you can move through them.

I’ve railed on this before, so I won’t belabor the point again. Just know that most users highly value the ability to use a gesture to get from one Virtual Desk to another. Without those gestures, you have to get to your overview screen with a 3-finger gesture, select your desktop, and click the desk you’d like to view. This workflow completely interrupts the feel of having multiple displays just sitting to either side of your main display and kills the productivity that a feature like Virtual Desks supplies.

To be fair, this latest implementation of Virtual Desks does come with all the keyboard shortcuts to move about your virtual spaces pretty quickly, so I’m very glad to see that included right out of the box this time around. You can move between desks, add/remove desks, and slide windows from one screen to an adjacent screen all with keyboard shortcuts. Here those are if you were wondering:

Search + Shift + = New desk

Search + Shift + – Remove desk

Search + ] Navigate to desk on right

Search + [ Navigate to desk on the left

Search + Shift + ] Move active window (or highlighted window in overview) to desk on the right

Search + Shift + [ Move active window (or highlighted window in overview) to desk on the left

Even with those in place, I still want to be able to move around using my trackpad for the ultimate Virtual Desk experience. A quick 3-finger swipe left or right is all it takes to move between your desk setups if you have the right settings applied, and it is beyond simple at this point to do this. All you need to do is go to chrome://flags/#enable-virtual-desks-gestures in your URL bar, click the button to enable it, and restart. After doing so, you’ll have not only the keyboard shortcuts, but also the ability to switch between desks with a simple 3-finger swipe left or right.

This does come at a bit of a cost, though. If you are used to scrubbing tabs with the same 3-finger gesture left or right, you’ll need to retrain your brain to make that a 4-finger gesture instead. For me, this is a small price to pay to be able to move around my Virtual Desks with ease and quickness, and I’m looking forward to the day when they simply implement this change and be done with it. Perhaps there’s some push back on the idea of changeing the long-standing 3-finger gesture for tab scrubbing, but they could easily remedy it by giving users the option of maintaining the 3-finger gesture for tabs and relegating the 4-finger one to Virtual Desk switching.

Either way, I hope this helps you take full advantage of this great new feature that is available to all Chrome OS users now. It’s been a long time coming, but it is nice to finally get to the point where Virtual Desks are simply part of the Chromebook experience and not a ‘coming soon’ feature any longer.

Intel Claims Xeon Cascade Lake-AP 56 Core CPU Up To 84% Faster Than AMD’s 64 Core EPYC Rome 7742 in Real-World HPC Benchmarks

Intel has posted a series of new benchmarks claiming that their Xeon class Cascade Lake-AP CPUs run much faster than AMD’s 2nd Generation EPYC Rome CPUs. The benchmarks which Intel claims are representative of ‘real-world’ performance in the HPC segment compare Intel’s 2S (dual socket) Xeon Platinum 9282 versus AMD’s EPYCX 7742 (also in a dual-socket configuration).

The Cascade Lake-AP Xeon Platinum 9282 56 Core CPU Claims To Be 84% Faster Than AMD’s EPYC 7742 64 Core CPU in Intel’s ‘Real-World’ HPC – AI Performance Benchmark Suite

The performance metrics for both processors were posted at Medium where Intel also recently published an article about core scaling and the reliance of modern applications on the number of cores available on processors. According to Intel, 8 cores along with sustained frequencies would result in better scaling than say a 12 core or a 16 core chip. Now Intel may have provided a lot of data backing up their findings but the same Intel was reluctant to move beyond 4 cores back in 2017 when AMD was offering their Ryzen chips with up to 8 cores and 16 threads. It’s interesting how suddenly, 8 core processors have become the next-big-thing for Intel’s mainstream lineup and the same would happen with 10th Gen family which is expected to receive even more cores.

For the HPC market, Intel says that – More processor cores add compute, but the overall system or workload performance depends on other factors, including:

· The performance of each core
· Software optimizations leveraging specific instructions
· Memory bandwidth to ensure feeding of the cores
· Cluster-level scaling deployed

Anyway, coming back to the topic, Intel’s latest benchmarks compared the Xeon Platinum 9200 versus the EPYC 7742. The Xeon Platinum is one of the elusive Cascade Lake-AP processors which feature two dies instead of a single monolithic one, stacking up to 56 cores and 112 threads. The chip has a base clock of 2.60 GHz and a boost clock of 3.80 GHz along with 77 MB of cache and a TDP of 400W. The Intel Cascade Lake-AP chips feature 12 memory channels compared to AMD’s 8 memory channels per chip.

The AMD EPYC 7742 is based on a 7nm process node (vs Intel’s 14nm+++) and features 64 cores / 128 threads. The chip has a base clock of 2.25 GHz and a boost clock of 3.4 GHz with 256 MB of L3 cache, 128 PCIe Gen 4 lanes and a TDP of 225W. The pricing plays a huge role too and here we see the EPYC 7742 with a price of $6950 US while the Xeon Platinum 9282 is suggested to have a price between $25K – $50K .

So right off the bat, we can note that this isn’t a fair comparison as not only does Intel’s chip have a higher running TDP but its cost is at least 3.5x higher than the AMD processor. Yes, the EPYC 7742 is AMD’s flagship 2nd Generation Rome processor for servers but even still, this isn’t an apples to apples comparison in any possible way.

Update: ServerTheHome’s Patrick J Kennedy has found out that the GROMACS version being used by Intel is an outdated one that doesn’t utilize the 256-bit wide AVX2 SIMD instruction set that is featured on Zen 2. The GROMACS 2019.3 version was used by Intel in what they are terming as real-world benchmarks, however, the latest version available is 2019.4 which adds support for Zen 2 based EPYC Rome chips like the EPYC 7742 which Intel tested their Xeon Platinum 9282 against. It just goes off to show that even Intel’s ‘Real-World’ benchmarks aren’t indicative of actual product performance and may lead to misleading statements against competitor products. And this won’t be the first time Intel is using misleading benchmarks or statements to downplay the competition. They have termed several important performance metrics used by tech reviewers that are invalid and not indicative of actual product performance while their own performance metrics surely are.

The benchmarks show that the Xeon Platinum 9282 delivers an average performance increase of 31%, going as high as up to 84%. There are several HPC specific applications shown which Intel claims are representative of real-world performance metrics in the server market. Dissecting each application reveal the breakdown of performance in each individual workload for the benchmark and in the case of the Manufacturing application (ANSYS Fluent Workload), Intel has a 13% average performance uplift over AMD’s EPYC Rome chip. Intel also claims that having AVX-512 onboard the new Xeon chips gives them an edge in several applications such as VASP, NAMD, GROMACS, FSI & LAMMPS.

The HPC segment is broad with varying compute requirements by workload. 56 core Xeon Platinum 9282 ranges from 8% to 84% better performance (31% higher geomean) than AMD’s 64 core Rome-based system (7742) on leading real-world HPC workloads across manufacturing, life sciences, financial services and earth sciences(2).

Some of the applications and results are shown above are a geomean of several specific workloads, all with different characteristics and sensitivities. Drilling into the details of these workloads provides further insight into performance. For example, Xeon Platinum 9282 leads AMD Rome 7742 by 13% on a geomean of 14 ANSYS Fluent workloads. Across those 14 different CFD simulations, Xeon’s results range from 2% lower to 36% higher.

Medium (Intel)

Intel further goes on to claim that Xeon Platinum 9200 series processors offer a lower TCO (Total Cost of Ownership). Since the performance of Xeon Platinum 9200 series is higher, you’d have to require a fewer number of nodes which should drive down the node acquisition cost, lower fabric, switching and cabling cost. It is also mentioned that while the Xeon-AP has a higher TDP and power requirement than AMD’s EPYC Rome (225W vs 400W), it should be offset by the lower number of nodes required to reach the same performance.

Aside from raw compute power, memory bandwidth is also highlighted as the main performance measurement factor and surprisingly, major industry players are already evaluating replacing their existing Intel-based systems with EPYC processors. Just a day before Intel published their report on performance, it was revealed that Netflix may soon be switching to AMD’s EPYC based platform as the TCO is similar but the EPYC solution may actually offer higher bandwidth than an Intel Xeon based system.

There will be a lot more action next-year in the server department as AMD will launch their energy efficient 7nm+ EPYC Milan CPUs to tackle both, Intel 14nm Cooper Lake and 10nm Ice Lake lineups, simultaneously.
