Intel Announces 10nm SuperFin Atom x6000E Elkhart Lake, Celeron and Pentium CPUs

Intel announced its new Atom x6000E series ‘Elkhart Lake’ of processors today, along with Pentium and Celeron N and J series chips, all targeted at industrial, embedded, and IoT applications. Intel is also pressing its Tiger Lake-UP3 chips into service for edge applications that require a higher level of performance. 

The Atom x6000E, Pentium, and Celeron processors feature either dual- or quad-core Tremont designs. Base frequencies for the Atom models vary between 1.2 to 1.8 GHz, while boost speeds top at at 3.0 GHz for chips that come with the feature. The Atom chips serve the 4.5W to 12W TDP range, while Intel splits the Pentium and Celeron processors into 6.5W and 10W variants. 

All models have baked in support for up to 64GB of dual-channel DDR4-3200 or LPDDR4x-4267 memory, much like the Tiger Lake processors, and come in BGA-mounted packages, meaning they aren’t socketed processors. Intel also segments the stack by only providing ECC support for the Atom processors. 

The lineup comes with Gen11 graphics, which Intel says offers up to twice the performance of the Gen9 graphics found on prior-gen models. Atom also takes a step forward, courtesy of the Tremont architecture, to notch a 1.7X gain in single-threaded workloads and 1.5X gain in multi-threaded work over previous-gen Goldmont Plus. 

As we see with chips destined for the IoT space, Intel offers a seven to ten-year support window, and that includes ensuring the chips will be available throughout that same window. Intel also leans in on AI support with this generation, including support for the OpenVINO toolkit that includes containerized packages to speed deployment of automation, sensing, and vision applications. 

Tiger Lake-UP3

Intel is also pressing its Tiger Lake-UP3 chips into service for applications that require a higher level of performance. These chips come with all of the normal trimmings of the Tiger Lake processors, which you can read about in-depth here, like the 10nm SuperFin process, Xe LP graphics, Thunderbolt 4, and support for AVX-512 and VNNI.

We were fairly impressed with Adata’s first foray into gaming PCs, which began a few months ago with the XPG Xenia 15, a genuinely impressive laptop with better-than-expected battery life. For its followup act, Adata is trying its hand at a mini PC with its new XPG Gaia.

The Gaia is based on Intel’s NUC 9 Extreme Kit, or otherwise known as Ghost Canyon. That is not necessarily a bad thing, just perhaps a bit uninspired for Adata’s introductory desktop.

Built for “gamers, esports pros, and tech enthusiasts,” Adata appears to have simply taken the Ghost Canyon NUC and stuffed its own brand memory and storage inside, then slapped an XPG logo on the front. The result is a compact 5-liter PC that should be relatively fast out of the box, though gamers, esports pros, and tech enthusiasts will undoubtedly want to add a discrete GPU.

The system is built around an Core i9 9980HK processor, a relatively meaty 8-core/16-thread chip with a 2.4GHz base clock, 5GHz boost clock, and 16MB of L3 cache. This also provides the graphics, by way of Intel’s UHD 630 GPU (24 execution units, 350MHz to 1,25GHz clockspeed). That’s fine for playing less demanding games like League of Legends, but is not going to cut it for more graphically intensive titles (Notebookcheck has a nice rundown of benchmarks).

One of the neat things about the Ghost Canyon NUC is that it can fit a discrete graphics card up to 202mm (7.95 inches) in length. There are even graphics cards designed specifically with the Ghost Canyon NUC in mind, like the Asus Dual GeForce RTX 2070 Mini OC Edition.

As far as what comes with the Gaia, in addition to the 9980HK CPU, Adata ships it with 32GB (2x16GB) of DDR4-3200 “sorted” RAM (undoubtedly from its own stock) and an XPG SX8200 Pro SSD, a fast storage drive rated to deliver read and write speeds of up to 3,500MB/s and 3,000MB/s, respectively. Adata does not mention the capacity, so it’s likely there will be multiple SKUs with different storage allotments.

The system also boasts Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, and is powered by a 500W PSU that is 80 Plus Platinum certified.

What is the run time of Acer battery?

Acer batteries have two main ratings on them: Volts and Amperes. Because size and weight of batteries is limited when compared to larger batteries such as car batteries, most companies show their ratings with Volts and Milliamperes. One thousand Milliamperes equals 1 Ampere. When buying a battery, select batteries with the most Milliamperes (or mAh). Batteries are also rated by Watt-Hours, perhaps the simplest rating of all. This is found by multiplying the Volts and the Amperes together. For example:

  • 14.4 Volts, 4000mAh (Note: 4000mAh is equal to 4.0 Amperes).
  • 14.4 x 4.0 = 57.60 Watt-Hours

How to Quickly Locate a Program’s EXE file on Windows 10

If you’re doing advanced troubleshooting or configuration of a Windows 10 application and need to locate the program’s EXE file in File Explorer, there’s a quick way to do it if you have access to a shortcut. Here’s how.

First, locate a shortcut that points to the application whose EXE you need to find, because you will need to open its properties window. If the shortcut is on your desktop, right-click it and select “Properties.”

If the shortcut is pinned to your taskbar, right-click it, then right-click its name again in the menu that pops up just above it. In the menu that appears, click “Properties.”

If the shortcut is in your “Start” menu, you have more hoops to jump through (and this method only works with traditional Windows Desktop Apps and not UWP apps). Right-click the “Start” menu shortcut for the application, and select More > Open file location.

This will open a File Explorer window that points to the actual application shortcut file. Right click on that shortcut, and select “Properties.”

No matter how you located the shortcut, a properties window will appear. Make sure you’re on the “Shortcut” tab, then click “Open File Location.”

You’ll be taken directly to the EXE’s location in File Explorer.

What you do next depends on what you’re trying to achieve. Just be careful in there—modifying or moving a program’s files can make it not work properly.

If You Can’t Find a Shortcut to Use

If a shortcut to the program whose EXE you want to find isn’t easily available, you can browse C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86) on your machine to find the application’s main program folder. Look for a folder with a name similar to the publisher of the program, or the name of the application itself. Open it, and you might find the EXE you’re looking for inside. Good luck!

iPhone 12 leak just revealed a bad last-minute surprise

Apple is readying a small 5.4-inch iPhone 12 that could be dubbed the iPhone 12 mini. And it may be the least powerful handset in the new iPhone lineup.

According to a new leak via MauriQHD on Twitter (via Notebookcheck), Apple is prepping a midrange chip called the B14 that could be destined for the iPhone 12 mini. It could be a “battery-saving-but-less-powerful A14” Bionic.

To be clear, MauriQHD does not have an established track record as a leaker. In addition, the tweet says that this chip could also be designed for an iPhone SE Plus or an iPhone SE 3 down the road.

Earlier this year, Apple fitted the iPhone SE 2020 with its latest A13 Bionic chip, so it would be a big surprise if the company decided to pack the iPhone 12 mini with anything other than the A14 Bionic.

But a B14 chip that’s less powerful could help keep costs down on the iPhone 12 mini should Apple decide to go in that direction.

The most recent rumors point to the iPhone 12 mini costing $50 or so more than the iPhone 11 due to the addition of 5G. However, earlier reports said that the iPhone 12 mini could cost as low as $549 without 5G.

If the iPhone 12 mini name sticks, a less powerful chip could make sense for the 5.4-inch iPhone 12. And the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 with A14 power would be the true successor to the iPhone 11. 

There’s just something about the timing of this rumor that seems off. If Apple was truly working on a B14 chip, you would think we would have heard something about it more than a month before the iPhone 12 launch. But anything is possible.

The iPhone 12 mini is expected to feature an OLED display in a design that’s even more compact than the iPhone SE 2020. And we still anticipate that the handset will feature dual rear cameras. 

The iPhone 12 Pro lineup would get the A14 Bionic plus a third camera for telephoto shots as well as a a LiDAR sensor for enhanced photography and AR performance. Apple’s iPhone 12 event should happen in October, so we shouldn’t have that long to find out if the B14 is legit or not.

Windows 10 antivirus is getting a huge upgrade

Microsoft has unveiled a series of changes to its Windows 10 antivirus service that will bring all the company’s extended detection and response (XDR) facilities under one roof.

Announced at the company’s Ignite 2020 event, the changes will see Microsoft 365 Defender (formerly Microsoft Threat Protection) and Azure Defender consolidated under the umbrella of the Microsoft Defender antivirus service.

The company claims the offering will provide the “broadest resource coverage of any XDR in the industry”, using AI to analyze attacks across different vectors and deliver automatic resolutions where possible.

Microsoft Defender has also been integrated with the firm’s security information and event management tool (SIEM), Azure Sentinel. The cloud-native SIEM draws in data from Microsoft Defender and other sources to deliver a comprehensive view of each attack and rank threats by priority.

The firm also announced that Microsoft Defender for Endpoint (formerly Microsoft Defender ATP) has entered general availability on Android and landed in preview on iOS, meaning the service is now available across all major operating systems.

On mobile platforms, the service will shield against phishing attacks, dangerous apps and malicious files, and can be used to wall off corporate data to minimize the risk of a breach.

Windows 10 antivirus

According to Microsoft, the move to consolidate its security offerings is designed to minimize complexity – and the issues that might arise as a result.

“Security teams have historically struggled to keep up with threats and signals across a patchwork of poorly integrated solutions that fail to cover the breadth of workloads, clouds and devices that businesses run on,” explained Vasu Jakkal, VP of Microsoft Security, Compliance and Identity.

By consolidating its XDR facilities and integrating with Azure Sentinel, Microsoft is hoping to simplify threat detection, analysis and resolution – especially in the context of changes brought about by the pandemic and remote working boom.

“Digital security is about people – it’s about empowering defenders to defend and protect employees, data, work and personal safety. It’s about making people and organizations resilient in an environment of unexpected change, like widespread remote work,” added Jakkal.

“Today we’re delivering a new set of security, compliance and identity innovations to help all customers simplify and modernize their environments by embracing the reality that the past seven months have likely reshaped the next 10 years of security and digital transformation.”
