Asus is getting ready to launch a beastly AMD Ryzen gaming desktop

From what we know so far about the Xbox Series X, it is a seriously impressive kit—it’s basically a monster gaming PC wrapped in console garb. Be that as it may, buyers with the requisite funds can still build or a buy an even more powerful PC. Case in point, Asus is launching a decked out ROG Strix GA35 desktop configurable with up to a 16-core/32-thread Ryzen 9 3950X processor and GeForce RTX 2080 Ti graphics card.

I don’t know how much the XbX will end up costing ($500-$600, is my guess) or how the custom GPU will ultimately compare to what’s available in the PC space, both now and later this year. Best case scenario is probably the equivalent of a 2080 Ti, when factoring in the ability to optimize games.

The XbX will undoubtedly be cheaper than the GA35, though Asus has not announced a price yet either. So, this is a good place to stop the comparison and shift focus solely to the GA35’s hardware makeup.

This desktop is essentially a tip of the cap to AMD’s third-generation Ryzen processors. The four CPU options include the Ryzen 9 3950X and 3900X, and Ryzen 7 3800X and 3700X. There are no Intel configurations available on this particular model.

Buyers will also be able to choose from a handful of GPUs, including the 2080 Ti, 2080 Super, 2070 Super, 2060 Super, and 2060. So, the lowest end configuration would pair a 3700X CPU with a 2060 GPU, which is not bad all (the 3700X is one of the best CPUs for gaming).

Asus is outfitting the GA35 with up to 64GB of DDR4-3200 memory. For storage, the system will be offered with up to a 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD for the primary drive, and a 1TB or 2TB HDD for secondary storage duties.

Other notable options include liquid cooling for the CPU (by way of an all-in-one cooler), onboard Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) connectivity, and two hot-swappable drive bays.

Asus actually announced this system at CES in January. What’s new is there now exists a product page, though Asus still has not said when exactly it will land at retail or what the starting price will be.

ASUS Unveils Dual-Screen ZenBook Duo UX481 Notebook

Last year ASUS introduced its exclusive ZenBook Pro Duo laptops with a secondary display aimed at creative professionals with performance-hungry color critical workloads. At CES 2020, the company revealed a new iteration of its dual-screen notebook — the ZenBook Duo UX481 — designed for road warriors (or creators in budget) and promising to offer decent performance and battery life in addition to the second monitor.

The ASUS ZenBook Duo model UX481 comes in the company’s signature Celestial Blue aluminum unibody and is equipped with a Pantone Validated 14-inch Full HD display with optional touch support and a 12.6-inch auxiliary screen. The latter can be used to run apps designed for the company’s ScreenPad or just extend Windows programs to it and increase useful screen real estate. It will be interesting to find out how significantly will the auxiliary monitor improve performance in productivity applications used by people who work on the go, but at least ASUS believes that this LCD makes sense for the target audience.

Inside the ZenBook Duo machine is Intel’s 10th Generation Comet Lake Core i5-10210U or Core i7-10510U processor (with UHD Graphics) that can be optionally enhanced with NVIDIA’s discrete GeForce MX 250 GPU with 2 GB of GDDR5 memory. The system comes with up to 16 GB of soldered-down LPDDR3 DRAM as well as a 256GB/512GB/1 TB PCIe SSD. Connectivity wise, we have a fairly standard 2020 laptop here, so it has Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5, USB 3.2 Gen 1/2 with Type-A as well as Type-C connectors, HDMI, microSD, and a combo audio jack.

ASUS equipped its ZenBook Duo with a 70 Wh battery, but it is rather hard to make predictions about actual battery life of the notebook given its second screen and applications developed for it. As for portability, being aimed at road warriors, the ZenBook Duo UX481 is relatively compact and lightweight for an aluminum 14-incher (especially when an additional screen is taken into account): it weighs 1.5 kilograms and is 19.9 mm thick.

ASUS will start sales of its ZenBook Duo model UX481 sometimes in the first quarter. The company does not announce pricing of its unique laptop, but it is natural that they will be sold at a premium.

ASUS’ Latest VivoBook S Packs 10th Gen, Lots of Colors

ASUS has introduced its new VivoBook S-series laptops that attempt to fuse style with performance in a reasonably priced package. The new notebooks are based on Intel’s latest 10th Generation Core processors and come in in chassis made of brushed aluminum and lightweight plastic with Resolute Red, Gaia Green, Dreamy White, or Indie Black finish.

ASUS’s 2020 family of VivoBook S notebooks includes 13.3-inch (S13 S333), 14-inch (S14 S433), as well as 15.6-inch (S15 S533) models equipped with a Full-HD display featuring thin NanoEdge bezels as well as 178°/178° viewing angles. The smallest machines come in black or white, whereas the larger laptops actually offer a choice between red, green, black, or white. As far as portability is concerned, the notebooks feature pretty much the same z-height of 15-16mm, but their weight varies from 1200g to 1800g depending on size and GPU installed.

The VivoBook S13 S333 is powered by Intel’s quad-core Ice Lake processors with up to Iris Plus ‘G7’ graphics with 64 EUs, whereas the VivoBook S14 S433 and the VivoBook S15 S533 are based on Intel’s quad-core Comet Lake processors with UHD Graphics. In both cases, ASUS offers optional GeForce MX discrete GPUs (see exact models in the table below). Whether or not it makes sense to install a standalone graphics processor into a mobile PC with Intel’s Iris Plus ‘G7’ is up to debate, but at least it is possible to get it with systems that come with basic integrated graphics.

One feature on these notebooks is the colored enter key. ASUS has stated that this key has a yellow outline (it’s more visible on darker keyboards) to act as an entry point into the modern world. What this means is that IMs and DMs and social media all require hitting ‘Enter’ to submit, and so this is one of the lifestyle additions that the company will take into its marketing strategy.

All the other features and specifications of all the 2020 VivoBook S variants are similar: Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5, USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A/Type-C, microSD, webcam, Harman/Kardon speakers, microphone, audio jack, and a 50 Wh battery. The manufacturer does not disclose actual battery life figures, but it is reasonable to assume that the VivoBook S13 S333 13.3-incher with integrated graphics will have a considerably longer uptime than the VivoBook S15 S533 15.6-incher with a discrete GPU.

ASUS yet has to announce MSRPs of its VivoBook S13 333, S14 S433, as well as S15 S533 laptops, but it is obvious that prices will depend on exact configurations. Good news is that the company promises to launch the notebooks in ‘early 2020’.

Asus tries its hand at a wireless gaming mouse with a built-in joystick

If you are in the hunt for the best gaming mouse, you might not have considered a model with a built-in joystick, though not necessarily from lack of interest—it’s a rather sparse field. It also just got a little big bigger with the introduction of the Asus ROG Chakram.

Our first impression of a mouse with a built-in joystick came by way of the Lexip PU94, and thankfully the production model we reviewed improved upon the initial design. I’m curious to see how the Chakram compares, but that will have to wait for another day.

In the meantime, Asus has provided a rundown of the specs and features of the Chakram. It’s a wireless rodent with support for the Qi standard. On the wireless side, you can connect it via RF (2.4GHz), or Bluetooth in a pinch (I would expect higher latency over Bluetooth, and Asus the joystick won’t work over Bluetooth). If you’re a ‘wired or die’ kind of person, there’s a bundled USB cable to go that route.

The built-in joystick is the primary attraction, and I’ll go over that in a moment, but it’s not the only interesting feature on this Chakram. The left and right clickers both use Omron switches, and you can access them for easy replacement by popping off the magnetic cover and buttons. No screwdriver is needed. Same goes for installing new switches, should you ever need to. They’re configured by way of an “exclusive push-fit switch socket.”

“It take just a moment to swap the switches, making it easy to drop in ones that fit your preferred operating force and feedback—or replace worn or broken switches to extend ROG Chakram’s lifespan,” Asus says.

The optical sensor is adjustable from 100-16,000 dpi. Other specs include 40g max acceleration and 400 IPS max speed.

Okay, back to the joystick. This works in both analog and digital mode. In analog mode, it’s supposed to function like an actual joystick or thumbstick, as found on pretty much any modern controller. Asus says this mode is “ideal for flight sims and racing games.”

In digital mode, which Asus recommends for first person shooters and battle royale games, it becomes a four-way programmable joystick (up, down, forward, and back). So, it sounds like there is a fair bit of versatility there.

Rather than take a one-size-fits-all approach, Asus includes both a longer and shorter joystick to pop on and off the nub embedded in the side. There’s also a socket cover if you’ve rather ditch the joystick altogether for a flush finish.

It sounds like an interesting entry in the gaming mouse space, albeit a pricey one. After showing off the Chakram at Gamescom last year, Asus says it will be available this month for ~$150.

ASUS Unveils All-White Concept Strix X570 Motherboard

Amid a plethora of ASUS announcements and product showcases at CES 2020, one of the more interesting pieces of hardware on display came on the motherboard side. In what ASUS is currently calling a concept, it had a full system with white components on display, including an X570 Strix motherboard dressed to the nines in white heatsinks and covers.

While ASUS hasn’t given much away about which model it’s based on. the specifications list include support for DDR4-4400 memory with a capacity of up to 128 GB, with an Intel AX200 Wi-Fi 6 wireless interface, and a Realtek RTL8125-AG 2.5 G Ethernet controller. A SupremeFX S1220A HD audio codec handles the onboard audio, while the rear panel features plenty of USB 3.2 Gen2 connectivity. The PCB, controller layout and overall PCB layout not only resemble the ASUS ROG Strix X570 E Gaming motherboard, but it has identical specifications match between the two boards.

On the rear panel cover is the typical Strix branding with an illuminated Strix RGB logo, while the M.2 heatsinks and chipset heatsink have the Strix inspired graffiti etching. A two-digit LED debugger is located at the bottom, with plenty of headers and connectors for superior connectivity; again, resemblant of the ASUS ROG Strix X570 E-Gaming. As with all other ASUS X570 models, the X570 is actively cooled.

At present, the all-white ROG Strix X570 motherboard is just a concept, but we’ve seen ASUS release white themed models before including the Prime series, as well as limited-edition versions of its Sabertooths (now TUF). This could be one ASUS concept that makes it to retail, but it still remains to be seen.

ASUS Launches Ultralight 14-Inch Project Athena ExpertBook B9450 – Just 865 Grams

Among its many CES 2020 announcements this week, ASUS has unveiled its ultra-light 14-inch ExpertBook B9 (B9450) laptop, which as alluded to in the name, is aimed at the corporate market. The laptop is powered by Intel’s 10th Generation ‘Comet Lake’ processor is equipped with robust business and security features, and furthermore is Project Athena certified as well.

The ASUS ExpertBook B9 (B9450) comes in a 13-inch-class magnesium alloy chassis that 14.9 mm thick and houses a 14-inch NanoEdge Full-HD display with anti-glare coating and ultra-thin bezels. Since the machine is based on Intel’s 10th Generation Core platform with a smaller footprint when it comes to the motherboard size, the internal architecture of the machine enabled ASUS to install a 33 Wh battery in case of the 865 gram model, as well as a 66 Wh battery in case of 995 gram SKU that can last for up to 24 hours on one charge.

The ExpertBook B9 (B9450) is based on Intel’s quad-core Core i5-10210 (1.6 GHz – 4.2 GHz) or Core i7-10510 (1.8 GHz – 4.9 GHz) processors, which is paired with 8 GB or 16 GB of LPDDR3 memory, as well as up to two M.2 NVMe SSDs. In the case of a two drive configuration, the drives can furthermore operate in RAID 0 mode for superior performance or RAID 1 mode for added reliability.

Connectivity wise, the ASUS ExpertBook B9 has Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 4.2, GbE (over mDP port) Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A, HDMI, and a 3.5-mm audio jack for headsets.

Like most laptops designed for business and corporate customers, the ASUS ExpertBook B9 has sophisticated security capabilities, including a Windows Hello-capable webcam with IR sensors and a shutter, a fingerprint reader, an optional TPM 2.0 chip, and various enhancements from ASUS.

ASUS yet has to announce pricing and availability dates of its ExpertBook B9 (B9450) laptop.

It is noteworthy that the ExpertBook B9 (B9450) notebook resembles the ASUSPRO B9 (B9450) laptop demonstrated back at IFA last September. The latter one was based on Intel’s Ice Lake platform, yet featured an extremely similar chassis and had the same feature set. The one that ASUS introduced at CES is powered by Comet Lake and is 15 grams lighter. At this point, the destiny of Ice Lake-based ASUSPRO B9 is unknown, but it is possible that it is still in development.

ASUS Showcases Concept 420mm AIO For TRX40

It’s no secret that ASUS has its fingers in multiple areas of computer components including motherboard, VGA, desktop, mobile, and peripherals. Taking into consideration the cooling requirement for AMD’s HEDT Ryzen Threadripper 3000 series of processors, it’s showcased its latest conceptual AIO CPU cooler design which features a large 420 mm radiator, supplied with three premium Noctua black fans.

With AMD set to release its 64 core 128 thread Threadripper 3990X in the coming months, ASUS has unveiled a concept design 420 mm AIO CPU with a couple of notable features. The TR4 socket cooler which currently has no name includes an all-black design with no RGB LEDs to speak of, although the CPU block does include ASUS’s 1.77″ LiveDash OLED customizable screen. Other features include a full cover cold plate specially designed to cool the 3rd generation Threadripper processors, with an all-black design that fits well with its ROG Zenith II Extreme TRX40 motherboard.

The unnamed concept cooler as displayed at ASUS’s suite at CES 2020 includes three Noctua NF-A14 2000 PWM fans which spin up to 2000 rpm and omits RGB LEDs for an all-black look which is more subtle. ASUS hasn’t released any more information about when it may hit production, or if it will, but upon speaking to ASUS they were very keen to have it ready for the launch of AMD’s Threadripper 3990X processor which features a TDP of 280 W.

What is the run time of ASUS battery?

ASUS batteries have two main ratings on them: Volts and Amperes. Because size and weight of batteries is limited when compared to larger batteries such as car batteries, most companies show their ratings with Volts and Milliamperes. One thousand Milliamperes equals 1 Ampere. When buying a battery, select batteries with the most Milliamperes (or mAh). Batteries are also rated by Watt-Hours, perhaps the simplest rating of all. This is found by multiplying the Volts and the Amperes together. For example:

  • 14.4 Volts, 4000mAh (Note: 4000mAh is equal to 4.0 Amperes).
  • 14.4 x 4.0 = 57.60 Watt-Hours

Watt-Hours signifies the energy needed to power one watt for one hour.
