The world of PCIe 4 SSDs already has plenty of speed demons, but Sabrent just took the crown. The company’s new Rocket 4 Plus SSD sports the fastest combination of read and write speeds currently available, beating out even Samsung’s latest 980 Pro PCIe 4 NVMe drive.
Both drives would probably make any list of the best SSDs, but Sabrent manages to just squeeze out the edge. The Rocket 4 Plus matches the Samsung 980 Pro’s 7,000 MB/s read time, but it surpasses Samsung’s drive with a 6,850 MB/s write speed. The Samsung drive, for comparison, reaches maximum write speeds of 5,000 MB/s.
According to Sabrent’s Rocket 4 Plus product page, it will be available in 2TB, 1TB, and 500GB capacities. That’s a far cry from the largest PCIe 4 SSD out there, a 4TB monster also made by Sabrent. However, in exchange for the lower capacities, you’re getting vastly superior maximum read and write speeds. Sabrent also shrouds the Rocket 4 Plus in a beefy custom heatsink to keep the drive running cool.
Sabrent hasn’t provided a release date or pricing information yet, but we’ll likely hear more soon.
Samsung Unpacked 2020 is happening today, but the star of the show, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, only got a light teasing. We got official press pictures, one or two specs, and a promise of more info on September 1. The good news is that there was also a full spec sheet leak today from XDA’s Max Weinbach, and it fills in most of the blanks.
Samsung’s second-generation foldable is officially the “Galaxy Z Fold 2,” a slight name change from “Samsung Galaxy Fold” that puts it in the same class as Samsung’s other foldable, the Galaxy Z Flip. The smartphone/tablet hybrid is very much in the mold of the Galaxy Fold 1 from last year, but it has a ton of iterative yearly upgrades and refinements.
The most noticeable upgrade is that the outer screen now fills the front of the phone. XDA’s specs list the display as a 6.2-inch, 2260×816 OLED display with a crazy 25:9 aspect ratio. This is dramatically bigger than the 4.6-inch display that shipped on the Fold 1, which looked really out of place, with somewhere around a 50-percent body-to-display ratio. The new display is still very tall and skinny, but the “phone” part of the Fold 2 now looks more like a smartphone.
At a glance, the Fold 2 might look like the same shape as last year, but it’s actually a tiny bit wider. You can get a rough idea of this from the official pictures, but XDA’s specs put the Fold 2 at 159.2×128.2×6.9mm when open, while the original fold was 160.9×117.9×7.6mm. That means, when folded, the front is a bit wider, too: 68mm wide compared to 62.8mm wide on the original Fold. The primary problem with the Fold1’s outer display was that it was very skinny, limiting things like the size of the keyboard and its ability to display a normal home screen with four columns of icons. The wider body and thinner bezels should help the Fold 2 approach a normal-sized smartphone screen.
XDA lists the big, inner Fold display at 7.6-inches with a 2208×1768 resolution. It’s now a 5:4 resolution instead of the iPad-like 4:3. Samsung confirmed the inner display is 120Hz, which is a big upgrade, but it did not mention the refresh rate of the outer display. XDA’s leaked spec sheet lists the outer display at 60Hz, which would be an odd proposition for users. It seems most people who try a higher refresh rate screen say something like “I could never go back to 60Hz,” but if these specs are right, the Fold 2 will ask you to do just that every time you close the phone.
Like the Galaxy Z Flip, the Fold 2 now officially has Samsung’s “ultra-thin glass” display cover, a glass-and-plastic sandwich that should be a huge improvement over the foggy, squishy, plastic cover that was on the original Fold. Like we learned on the Z Flip, ultra-thin glass is not as nice as Gorilla Glass, since the top-most layer is plastic reminiscent of a stick-on screen protector. While you still won’t be touching glass, Samsung’s display cover gives you a firmer surface to swipe around on and better optics compared to an all-plastic cover. Be warned that the flexible glass isn’t that firm, though—the Z Flip still had a big crease over the hinge, which would sink down when it was open, creating a trough across the middle of the display.
The other interior improvement is the hole-punch camera, a big upgrade over the gigantic notch that was fitted to the original Galaxy Fold. The Fold 1 notch took up most of the status bar area on the right side of the display, making it tough to swipe down the notification panel with your right hand. The hole punch will leave a lot more of the display in a usable state.
Another Fold 2 feature borrowed from the Z Flip is what Samsung called a “completely reengineered” hinge, which can stop at the halfway point, in an “L” shape. This hinge wasn’t a great idea in a flip phone form factor since it stopped you from flipping the phone open, but nobody wants to flip open a tablet-style device, so this seems more appropriate here.
A Qualcomm press release lists the Fold 2 with a Snapdragon 865 Plus and says “appearing commercially for the first time, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 features the latest Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 mobile connectivity system.” This means the Fold 2 will be the world’s first Wi-Fi 6E device, supporting the new 6GHz Wi-Fi band for better performance in crowded environments (provided you also have a Wi-Fi 6E access point).
XDA lists the phone as having 12GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, wireless charging, and a 4500mAh battery. The cameras don’t seem like they’re up to the level of the Note 20 Ultra, with 12MP sensors for the main camera and ultra-wide angle and telephoto lenses. The selfie cameras on the cover and inner displays both live in a hole punch cutout, and they are 10MP sensors.
Samsung says it will reveal more details on September 1, which is also when pre-orders start.

There have been rumors for several weeks now that Samsung has been preparing to introduce a new Android tablet with a lower cost of entry than its flagship Galaxy Tab S6. Today, those rumors have been made official as Samsung quietly posted the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite on its store in Indonesia.
Just like was rumored, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite looks a lot like the company’s flagship tablet, but with a few cutbacks. For one, the display is a bit smaller at 10.4-inches and has a resolution of 2400×1200. It’s also not an OLED panel, instead using a more affordable TFT panel.
That display also supports input from an S Pen and, just like the regular Tab S6, one is included in the box. Notably, though, it looks like this is just a stylus S Pen, it doesn’t have a battery/Bluetooth for the air gestures that launched with Galaxy Note 10.
Under the hood, Samsung says the Lite offers a 1.7GHz octa-core processor (with 2.3GHz boost), but it’s not named. Presumably, though, it’s an Exynos processor. That processor is backed up by 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. There’s also a microSD card and a USB-C port for charging and data transfer. There’s a 7,040 mAh battery inside, too, which Samsung says should last around 12 hours.
A big pro compared to the regular Galaxy Tab S6? The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite has a headphone jack.
In terms of software, the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite offers up Android 10 and Samsung’s One UI 2.1 skin. DeX support is nowhere to be found, but otherwise this should be an identical experience to Samsung’s flagship tablet — for better or for worse.
How much does it all cost? Your guess is as good as ours. Samsung doesn’t detail pricing on this listing, though rumors have pinned it at around $400. Hopefully, a wider launch is right around the corner.

The device, seen at 0:55, has the harder angles of a Galaxy Note, but without any top bezel or visible front-facing camera.
03/31 Update: Samsung has replied to me saying only that it doesn’t comment on future products. This obviously gives the video leak another level of excitement, especially given Samsung’s public commitment to under-display cameras and the leaked 2020 timeline for its introduction on smartphones (more detail below). That said, I also wouldn’t rule out the company just being deliberately vague. I will chase up Samsung again and attempt to get further clarification. In the meantime, try to keep your expectations in check.
My initial reaction was that this is too good to be true, but well connected Samsung insider Ice Universe and acclaimed Korean site The Elec have both stated that Samsung will launch a phone in 2020 with an under-display camera.
The Elec explained that, internally, Samsung calls the technology ‘UDC’ (literally, Under Display Camera) and it works by integrating a transparent display over the punch hole. The result is no notch, no visible punch hole and no need for a mechanised pop-up camera. The Elec said Samsung began production of these displays in October, while Ice Universe wrote that it would not launch on one of the established Galaxy ranges – which only deepens the mystery.
Interestingly. Samsung itself been open about its plans. Since as far back as November 2018, Hassan Anjum, Samsung’s product marketing director revealed the company’s ‘New Infinity’ UDC display and said that they “are just around the corner, and I can’t wait to tell you more about them.” Samsung has also long-teased its upcoming smartphones through ‘accidental’ leaks on its website and in marketing videos.
I have reached out to Samsung for a comment on this mystery device and will update this article when I have a response. In the meantime, keep your fingers tightly crossed.

A few days ago studying in the UH library, I noticed my laptop all of a sudden wasn’t receiving power and the light my AC adapter was blinking. After unplugging it from the laptop, that is, from the power jack, the AC adapter’s light turned solid green again. Then, as you might guess, after plugging it back into the laptop’s power jack, the light on the adapter would again start blinking and no power would circulate.
After brief research, I learned that I could take the battery out and press the power button to relieve all currents and that after that everything would work fine. Well, I did get it to work, however not my this method. After trying it several times and failing, I figured I’d just use the laptop without the battery, since it powered the laptop without the battery in it. Then the idea of just placing the battery back in the laptop while I was receiving power came up. So as the laptop is working I placed the battery in and SUCCESS the AC adapter no longer was blinking and it was successfully transferring power to the laptop and battery.
Now, however, several days later, in a similar library, I noticed I wasn’t receiving power again. When I unplugged the adapter from the laptop, the light on the adapter continued to blink. This was not the case previously. Previously, the light on the adapter would only blink when plugged into the laptop and would turn solid green when I disconnected it from the laptop. Now however, without the laptop ever coming into the picture, the AC adapter, by itself, not plugged into anything other than the wall, constantly blinks. The laptop receives no power, and I’m stuck.
Also, used my sisters AC adapter, she has a similar laptop, and everything worked fine. Meanwhile, my AC adapter, while plugged into the same power jack in the wall, just blinks.. and blinks…

DDR5 is on the way! We shouldn’t have to wait too long to see next-generation DDR5 system memory land in systems, according to Samsung. But there’s still plenty to be excited about right now as the memory manufacturing giant sets up its fabs for volume production of DDR5 in 2021.
The news comes straight from Samsung, who’s just announced its first EUV-based DRAM, D1x. These new DDR4 chips will act as precursor to further EUV-based DDR5 products next year, including those intended for use within mobiles, servers, datacentres, and, you guessed it, PCs.
DDR5 will double the available data rates of DDR4, which is currently in service across most gaming PCs built in the latter half of the 2010s. The standard set out by its governing body, JEDEC, also outlines a rather spectacular density increase per chip, meaning chipmakers will be able to squeeze a lot more memory into a much smaller footprint when DDR5 arrives.
As for EUV, or Extreme Ultraviolet lithography, this is a lithographic technology that allows for a reduction in silicon manufacturing complexity. In theory, it allows chip manufacturers of all shapes and sizes—including those that produce CPUs and GPUs—to simplify the entire lithographic process by using shorter wavelengths of light. Sounds great, but it also costs a heap and no one has quite managed to figure out that whole ‘profitability’ thing.
But it’s starting to look like some major silicon players are getting to grips with the new technology. TSMC, who produce Nvidia’s Turing GPUs and AMD’s entire 7nm lineup, already make some chips on the EUV-based 7nm+ node—but none that matter to us PC gamers. AMD appears to be looking towards the enhanced 7nm node for Zen 3 and RDNA 2.0, which relies on the traditional DUV, or deep ultraviolet, method instead.
The latest leaks regarding Intel’s plans for 2021 currently show it committing to the DDR4 status quo with its next-(next-)gen Intel Rocket Lake CPUs. However, AMD’s future Zen processors could pick up the next-gen memory standard first. Either way, we don’t expect gaming PCs to be at the forefront of DDR5 adoption. Boo.
Micron, a US-based memory manufacturer, is already sampling its next-gen DDR5 registered DIMMs (RDIMMs). These are not for the likes of you and me either—rather these are intended for whopping server racks—but it’s touting a 1.85x performance increase with DDR5 over DDR4, and that’s a convincing glimpse of what’s to come in PC gaming’s future.
Samsung’s “4th-gen 10nm-class (1a) EUV-based 16Gb DDR5/LPDDR5” (phew) memory will hit mass production sometime in 2021. If Samsung expects growing demand for DDR5, we’re sure to see the entire computing industry shifting in line with its expectations. Hopefully PC gaming won’t trail too far behind, either.
