With the introduction of the Exynos 990 SoC that is supposed to power the upcoming Galaxy S11 lineup, Samsung completely ditched its focus on custom high-performance processor cores. The Mongoose cores in the Exynos 9820 that should have provided the edge over ARM’s Cortex-A76 cores featured in the Snapdragon 855 did not really cut it, so Samsung decided to shut down the custom core development facility in Austin. As always. Samsung will be offering both Exynos 990 and Snapdragon 865 versions for its 2020 flagships, even though the Exynos SoCs will most likely prove a bit slower. But not all is lost, as Samsung is rumored to already be working on a next gen Exynos 1000 SoC that should at least even the playing field.
The rumor comes straight from reputable leaker Ice Universe, who recently reported that Samsung could be using ARM’s Cortex-A78 as high-performance cores for its next gen Exynos 1000 SoC. Qualcomm will most likely use the same cores for whatever comes after the Snapdragon 865, so it all depends on how well each of the companies integrates these cores with other components like the GPU. Speaking of GPUs, Ice Universe reports that Samsung has not yet decided on the exact model to be integrated in the Exynos 1000. Since it is sticking with ARM’s technology, it might opt for the Mali-G78 GPU, but chances are that Samsung will finally include an RDNA mobile GPU designed in collaboration with AMD.
Last, but not least, Ice Universe mentions that the Exynos 1000 should be produced using the 5 nm process. Samsung has its own fabs, but it is a bit behind TSMC with the availability of the 5 nm nodes, so the Exynos 1000 will most likely be released towards the end of 2020.

These are massive upgrades compared to the Galaxy S10 (3,400 mAh) and Galaxy S10+ (4,100 mAh) which were no slouches themselves when it came to longevity. Interestingly, SamMobile notes that the same batteries will power both the 4G and 5G versions of the Galaxy S11 with the Galaxy S11+ expected to only come in a 5G version. As such, it may be the 4G Galaxy S11 which leads the pack.

“I used to be the most determined fan of exynos, but it disappointed me. It was caused by the wrong decision of Samsung’s leadership,” he continued. “This is the price Samsung should pay. Samsung has wasted 5 years on the CPU, and it lags far behind.”
On paper, the good news for US customers is Samsung’s Galaxy flagships all use Snapdragon chips. The problem is, historically, Samsung has not been a fan of releasing two versions of its phones with significantly different capabilities and it has capped both performance and functionality of the faster model in the past to eliminate this.

Picked up by the ever-alert XDA Developers, Samsung has publicly revealed the Galaxy S11 for the first time in its application to China’s CCC. The company also disclosed its exact model number as well as its headline feature and fast charging speed.
12/1 Update: popular Samsung insider @IceUniverse has built upon the OnLeak’s design leak revealing that “key parts are wrong, the real design is more beautiful than this” explaining that the cameras will be symmetrical and the 5x optical zoom lens will be square. While the display will have a class-leading 120Hz display.
11/27 Update: acclaimed leaker @OnLeaks has teamed with CashKaro to reveal just how radical Samsung’s Galaxy S11+ will be thanks to an extreme new quintuple rear camera in a huge rectangular hump. The primary camera is understood to be 108MP with 5X optical zoom, capable of 8K video recording but, aside from ultra-wide angle and telephoto lenses, it is unknown what the other modules will do. The first of these is good news. Samsung confirms the Galaxy S11 (listed as ‘SM-G9860’) will come with 5G. This should set the bar for 2020 smartphones with almost all rivals upgrading their flagships to 5G tech, including wide-band support from Apple.
The second disclosure, is less positive. Samsung reveals that the Galaxy S11 will only have support for a maximum charging speed of 25W. Granted, this is a step-up from the ageing 15W standard of the Galaxy S10, but the Note 10 Plus introduced 45W charging so it’s going to raise eyebrows that Samsung has taken a step down from this.
I suspect the reality is Samsung will again save 45W charging for the larger Galaxy S11 Plus, but with big rivals like OnePlus, Honor and Huawei all offering phones with 40W+ charge capabilities, it’s surprising to see Samsung be so unambitious with Galaxy S11. It also confirms that revolutionary new battery tech Samsung is working on will not make it into the phone.
That said, elsewhere we know Samsung is aiming high. Samsung is equipping its Galaxy S11s with a potentially groundbreaking camera codenamed ‘Hubble’ due to its extreme zoom capabilities. There will also be new shooting modes, a new design, big performance upgrades, next-gen memory, a supersized fingerprint sensor and a real crowdpleaser: much bigger batteries.
With all this information, should you still buy the Galaxy S10 or Galaxy Note 10? On the surface no, but I will admit there are some massive Black Friday savings to be had on both models, which might just tip the balance.
